Installed Sonnax kit, question about existing springs?

I installed the sonnax kit in my truck tonight only to find out that the PO had already done it. But I decided to install the new parts anyway as I didn't know how long ago the kit was installed. Upon removing the tricumulator springs I found that each bore had 4 springs in it. Have any of you ever heard of this? I know I haven't, I can't figure out why so many would have been required? At any rate I put everything back together and the tranny works fine but the shifts are no different than before.
