Straight pipe vs Aftermarket muffled
Is there a difference in EGT/power/fuel economy? I was looking into a 4" turbo back for my 2000 7.3 and am trying to decide on whether to go get a mbrp or other exhaust system, or take it to the local muffler shop and have him just do a 4" straight pipe.
Thanks all for the information put on this website, tons and tons of knowledge on here that is just great for someone getting into their first PSD

i have had an 03 dodge cummins with lots of mod and now i have a 7.3 stock and the diff in money you will spend on a full out turbo back system is not worth it in my book. they both will lower temp reduce back pressure and give a little bit of power diff. i can tell you when i had my cummins my buddy had the same setup as me only he spent 5 or 6 hundred on a exhaust system and neither one of us could tell the diff except for sound. id cut the muffler out and straight pipe it and put the extra you were goin to spend on a tuner or some gauges. just me tho.

i just bought my truck, and in my searching and test drives i drove one with no muffler. i thought it sounded bad and was too loud. on my tuck i have a 4" banks turbo back but i have a magnaflow muffler. nice turbo whistle, no droning, and on hard acc. you get a good exhaust growl. ill do it again if/when this one rots away

Order a straight thru Walker BTM muffler off of RockAuto Auto Parts for $46 plus shipping. Gives you the straight thru performance and a descent sound. I've read and talked to others that said there wasn't much difference between going to a 4" to 5" full system other than sound and a lot more money. I'm happy with my setup, and did it myself for cheap.

The only diff your going to get with a 4" turbo back is a slight..slight drop in EGT's, the stock exhaust with a muffler delete pipe is good for about 400HP..trust me youll need alot to get to 400HP by then youll put an exhaust on lol the 4" also has a deeper tone, the 5" even deeper, id never go smaller then 5" now.. |

No problems making way over 400HP with a 4" full system heck its been done on the stock 3.5" years ago. Masami made just over 400 hp reliably on a downpipe, stock midpipe and muffler and a replacement mandrel bent 3.5 inch tailpipe. You do not have to replace the entire exhaust..
