My friend and I were about to do the foil delete for our 01 and 99 7.3 turbo diesels and A teacher at my friends auto school who has his own shop said not to do the foil delete because it would make the turbo run hotter and would ruin it sooner? is there anyone who can give me some insight on this?
Yeah that teacher is a tard, that doesnt make sense cause the foil is on the outlet side of the turbo. That air wont see the turbo again until its already been though the motor.
The insulation was added mid year in 99 due to sound complaints from people driving the E99 trucks, also one of the reasons they changed the turbo in the E99's to the later ones.
just did it. looks great and it only took me about 40 mins start to finish. all i used was a flat head screw driver to rip/pry most of foil/insulation off of the pipe then wiped the remaining insulation down with laquer and used an electric drill with a wire cup brush attached to take the rest of the crap off. very simple and im thinking about getting some high temp paint and making the engine compartment stand out a little bit.
i wrapped mine with black header wrap cause i like the way it looks and it still whistles a lot but idk if it keeps the heat out or if it just heats it up.. havent noticed a difference.
the header wrap would keep it heated a little more i would think. the pipe on the other side of the turbo would that be negatively effected if i took it off and painted it like im going to do to the one i just did the foil delete on?
I painted both of mine just dont paint where the boots seat. I can get a pic of mine. Also I spray hair spray in the boot I read it helps seal. Maybe it dont but I do it anyway
