I use mobil turbo diesel truck 5-40. $21 a gallon at wally world. I change oil every 5k and fuel filters every 10k. I know, its probably too early to drop the oil but oil is cheaper then a repair bill.

You are correct but it depends on which oil grade you are talking about. Amsoil's 0W-30 says 35k or 1yr whichever comes first with a filter change halfway through. At the 1yr or 35k mark you can send a sample out to them to see if you need to change the oil or just to see what's going on in your engine.

In the long run, the way I looked at it is this . . . even if the oil wasn't better they stand behind the fact that I can run it for 35k miles with only a filter change halfway through so it's cheaper! Do the math . . . if you change your oil every 3k miles at $50 a pop it would cost way more to use conventional petroleum based oil. Just my .02 . . .

Even using Amsoil I still change my oil every 10k and filter at 5k miles. I change the fuel filter every 4k. . .

I choose synthetic because of it's cold weather flow capabilites. I live in Michigan and it can get pretty cold. I don't like the idea of my engine starting and running for any amount of time before the oil flows to critical components. Do a little test yourself and throw 2 qts. of oil (1 dino, 1 syn) in a deep freeze overnite. The next day try pouring both out. Now imagine your oil pump trying to pump that thick goo.

The compressor in my shop would trip the circuit breaker if I didn't let the compressor get warm before turning it on. I switched it to synthetic and can now turn it on as soon as I get in the shop and it hasn't tripped the breaker once.

I spend money on stuff with proven results.

What else would explain the 1,000's of loyal people who are just sure, that the magnet-on-the-fuel-line, "Turbolator" in the intake, split-fire plugs, etc.. etc.. etc.. makes a significant difference.

I put an HVH supersucker spacer on the intake of my 440ci mopar and made 12 hp and 10ft/lbs,

The test for me is why wouldn't the manufacturers use all these cheap fixes if they actually did something?

If synthetic oil made a real mileage difference in fuel consumption, every Jap ecno-box would come with it in the crankcase to boost the numbers they all compete so hard for....

Many of the do and it isn't just for milage it is for longevity. The japps off 5/50 and 10/100 for their warrenties. Chevy 3/36. I owned a BMW MC40, it came with 3/36 soft parts warrently and 5/50 bumper to bumper. It used synthetic and the interval for changes were 12-15,000 miles.

I use it, but want to be honest with myself as to why I do
Do I think all the gadgets work? No.

Here's Shell's new oil formulas.

Take notice the goal for each formula.

And also notice Triple Protection reduces engine wear by 22%. And I believe that's a group II oil (not 100% sure).

Other link.
