I am looking for other owners of Ford trucks with the 7.3L diesel engine who have tried some of the items I list below and can give me advice on them. I have a 1999 Ford F550 crew cab dually I bought a few months ago. It has 167,000 miles on it and I am about to start adding some things to it to help with performance and Mileage. Here is a list of the items. I am adding them in the order listed. I will be buying these 1 at a time starting with the intake system which I plan on ordering next week.
I am between these 2 cold air intake systems.
S&B Cold Air Intake for 1998-2003 Ford Powerstroke 7.3L
SKU# 75-5062
Or I am leaning more toward this one by aFe.
aFe Power Magnum FORCE 51-10192 Ford Diesel Truck 99-03 V8-7.3L (td) Performance Intake System (Dry, 3-Layer Filter) cold air intake.
This is the exhaust I plan on adding.
MBRP S6200P Turbo Back Single Side Exhaust System 4 inch with muffler.
I am torn between the edge CTS Evolution tuner with the EGT probe or the TS 6 position chip. I am leaning toward the Edge product mainly because of the tuning options, upgradable over the internet and I can use it to monitor all of the different systems.
I would really like to hear from anyone that has used any or all of the products on a similar Ford with the 7.3L engine.
Save your money and just run the 6637 filter from Napa with your stock tube.
I have the S&B it does look nice but the lid rattles over the filter. A bead of RTV fixed this.
I've had 3 different chips and the PHP hydra is the best system for the 7.3. Easy to load and use the tunes and you can run other brand/tuners on the hydra.
If you want to monitor everything get an edge cts2. When you are ready to buy get with Corey@cncfab
I run the S&B and like it OK, I also run the Hydra chip and an Edge CTS2 for monitoring. And I have a 4" SS Diamond Eye no muffler (should have put the muff on, drones a bit on highway)
I got everything from @Corey@CNCFAB, he's a site sponsor and resident 7.3 guru :thumb:
What kind of difference did this setup do for you? I am towing a 40 foot 5th wheel and need the extra power for hills. A little more OMG won't hurt either.
@kf4qoe, I do carry the AFE also. The 6637 is an ok filter, but just sits on the fender. I'm more of a fan of the clean look of the S&B also.
Not a fan of EDGE tuning either unless you had a zf6, but they still aren't that great compared to PHP tunes on either a TS chip or better yet the Hydra.
If you'd like more info, you can email me at sales@cncfab.us
I'd do the 6637 filter and modify the factory air box that's what I did. Hydra chip, edge insight for gauges,4 inch exhaust....me personally though I'd do some maintenance items first like fluid and filter changes, differetial fluids, check brakes and ball joints etc. Before I dumped money into performance parts
The previous owner took excellent care and maintenance of the truck. The trans fluid is bright pink. I am about to do a oil change and replace the fuel filter. The intake system is my first update. Then the exhaust, then the Edge monitor with her probe and lastly the chip. One more question. What should see for egt on a normal basis? What is my high and low egt's? This is my first diesel to own. I have driven many of them over the years as a paramedic.
Yes I forgot to mention that I plan on adding as big a trans-cooler as I can find.
Another question I have is about when my truck was made. My truck is a Eclipse Custom. It has a Western Hauler style tow bed on the back. The sticker inside of the drivers door says it was built by Eclipse Custom 04/99. I am figuring it is an early model 1999. Also where do I find my computer model since I will be ordering a chip later on? Is it only found on the computer inside the drivers kick panel or is there somewhere else I can find it?
Thanks again for all of the great help and advice.
That is a late '99 build date. Cut off was 11/98 for some parts and 12/98 for other parts I believe. I have an e99 that was built in 10/98.
The PCM code is on the PCM itself. There is a 10mm head bolt just under the master cylinder that holds the main plug into the PCM and there are 2 8mm head bolts inside the cab down by the E-brake pedal. The sticker will be there on the PCM itself. More than likely you have a PMT_ or NVK_ being a L99 build. Either way, its 3 capital letters followed by 1 number.

Thanks. Cory. That's what I figured. I was hoping I would not have to pull it out until I had to. I was not sure about the build date since the sticker was installed by a custom builder not Ford. I thought it may be an early 99 since it was built and sent to Eclipse afterwards.
