Hey y'all, I'm going to have some extra money this summer to finally start doing some more performance mods for my truck. I don't have the money to do anything crazy but was looking into injectors like 160/80 160/100 175/80 etc etc. I want high 300's or low/barely 400 which I believe based on what i've read these injectors will get me there. I'm really starting to like the P.I.S. 175/80's but I can't find any reviews or really anything on them - does anyone have experience with them? Also, i'd like to do something with my turbo in order to support these injectors. I've seen and read alot about "van turbos" which is really just the same turbo except with a 1.15 housing? Does anyone have any experience with that? My trucks an e99 so would I need anything to fit the van turbo (aka is the van turbo fitted for later model 7.3's)? Thanks in advance.
Cant help much in regards to the van turbo but if your looking for high 300's low 400's and dont want to spend a ton on fuel mods and turbo go with a 160/30. Stock fuel can support just fine, turbo with a billet wheel and rebuild kit will do great also. I believe you would be very happy with this setup.
the 175/80's really dont require much more but a different turbo would be helpful and some fuel mods as well. Like 4 line feed from CNC fab and a healthy stock pump should be good.
Valve body, tripple disc converter, good tuning and an upgraded cooler for your transmission should be done if your not looking to replace it immediately. Unless your manual then a new clutch will be needed.
The 160s vs a 175 is just 15cc more capacity due to increased plunger stroke. Then add whatever nozzle fits your setup and use. 160/30s will do what you are asking. If you could afford it going with a T4 kit would open up lots of turbo sizing options.
Not really much point in a T4 mount staying at/around 400hp. Except making your wallet $1600 lighter.
I have a special going on now with a Hydra chip, KC billet wheel, and a 360 * bearing kit for $600 shipped. 160/30's will have a bit less drive pressure to where the stock turbo will handle those injectors very well with the upgraded bearing.
160/30's are the perfect injector for someone who daily drives and/or tows with their truck. It puts you right at 400HP and you should not have issues with smoke or EGT's, as long as the tunes are setup for them.
Unfortunately, with an e99, your drop-in turbo options are extremely limited. If you are looking to grow in the future, a T4 or T4i style setup is the way to go. A lot of guys will upgrade to the L99-03 turbo setup so they can throw a 38r in there. This is only economical if you can get all the later models parts (intake spyder, up-pipes, etc.) for dirt cheap or free. If you have to buy all of the stuff new, you will get very close to the cost of going with the T4 or T4i route. Whatever route you choose, just don't go the D66 route. Far too many have done that and regretted it (smoke, lag, and EGT problems).
If only we could've warned people about those years ago. lol
So far, the only D66 version that has been working well is Charlie's KC66 STG1. Not sure what he is doing different but owners are not have those issues. His KC66 STG2, it was laggy and EGT issues, so he took them all of the shelf and are no longer available.
Yes it is smaller, and it is very fast to spool. That is why we recommend this turbo for the 350-500hp range. The turbine wheel is 3.0" OD and 2.659" exducer. This converts to 76.2mm (BW lists as 76mm) and 67.5mm (BW lists as 68mm).
