Oil temp. gauge

hey guys,
Just wanted to run something buy you. I was installing my Banks 4" exhaust this weekend and was reading in the manual that when installing a chip they recommend an oil temp. gauge and that optimum temp is 230 F and there is also a bung welded
on to the down pipe for a pyrometer. So 1 do you think the oil temp gauge is nessecery and 2 do you think the pyrometer on the down pipe is accurate enough if you stay below the 1100F that banks recommends.
Thanks Tim

i would say EGT guage is a nesessity......but the oil temp gauge isnt nessisarely needed.......oil temp varies a great deal depending on where the sender is located and isnt usually an accurate or needed reading....but EGT's are critical........just my two cents......Marc

maybe the oil temp. sensor is meant to adjust the power out put of the chip until the engint is warmed up. maybe? similar to the eot sensor.

The oil temp thing doesn't ring abell. Maybe trans temp. I've had every electronic upgrade, power wise, that Banks offers for the 7.3(all of 2) And I don't recall anything mentioned about oil temp. But ttrun The bung in the downpipe should be good, but try to stay closer to 1000 degrees. Believe it or not though, I didn't have all the airflow requirements Banks recommended for the truck with the big hoss on level 5 and six gun on 6, and I never went higher than 900 degrees, after turbo--same place you are talking about. I also have their exhaust.

Yes, the location after turbo, like you found in the banks system. Sorry if I didn't specify. Thats why said stay closer to 1000 degrees. The difference from the bung being before or after turbo can be as much as 300 degrees, so better safe than sorry at 1000.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that was wierd also for oil temp and egt both thought i'd ask. I understand the egt is a must especially with a tuner or chip just wasn't sure on the oil temp. Anybody got any suggestions on a good looking pod for a gauge. And what about a boost gauge, any need for that?
I just noticed alot of advertising for them.
Thanks Tim
