Air and exhaust

I recently installed an AFE stage 2 air box and filter. I did notice a little more noise than my stock intake had running unloaded, but when I hooked up my 5th wheel and boat behind it,it made kind of a pulsating ssh, ssh, shh sound, kinda like a flap blowing open and closed right as the turbo was kicking in (1800-2000 rpm) then goes away after I hit 2000 to 2100 rpm. Anyways I was wondering if anyone has had that happen with theres and if its normal?

Also I was looking into buying a 4" turbo back exhaust system in a week or two and was looking at the banks set up with the power elbow. Just thought I'd get anyone who wants to reply about it, input and if the extra money for the power elbow is worth it. I was going to skip buying the elbow if its not going to make or break the exhaust system. Besides it looks real tight to get to the rear bolts of the turbo housing unless theres a trick to that as well. and if anybody has other exhaust systems they would recommend. Thanks in advance Tim

if your truck is a pre 99.5, and the filter is drawing the air through that passasge in the very front, there is a rubber cover you need to remove.....you access it by lifting up the plastic cover that is between the grill and radiator.........Marc

hi,thanks for replying, I have a 02' 4x4, cc, dually. The AFE kit I installed required removing all of the factory air box and battery cover. The noise I get from it gets so annoying as I live in colorado and pulling in the mountains 55mph is often the most comfortable speed most of the time and thats right when it makes that noise.
Thanks Tim

Sounds like a surge problem to me, aftermarket wheels usually help with this a lot. The Banks exhaust and other Banks products are good stuff, but it's all a bit pricey for my tastes. I doubt the power elbow is worth it though. Magnaflow makes a good 4" kit for these trucks, as well as MBRP. I'd steer clear of Bully Dog stuff, it tends to never fit right.

you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge with diesels. But what is a surge problem and what is a aftermarket wheel? Also it didn't do it with the factory air box but the day after i installed it (AFE box) we went camping and it was makeing that noise the power is still there and my gas milage shot up by 2.5 gpm with the aftermarket air box but that dang noise! I don't know if I'm explaining the noise right, its definately a suction sounding noise. Is it possible that I have a big air box and filter and no other upgrades and that im getting too much air? Thats why I was going for the 4" exhaust upgade as well? The parts place i bought the afe from said I should do both at the same time I wonder if that is why? Should i move this thread over to powerstroke problems?
Thanks Tim

Surge:He's talking about the turbine compressor's lack of ability to maintain consistent boost pressure, aftermarket compressor wheels in late 99 to 03 7.3 help this problem alot, if not totally remove the problem altogether. Banks has one for $99, others are about $75. As far as the power elbow, it won't do anything noticeable. And for the money I wouldn't change it. But the exhaust is top notch, thats why its a little pricey. I have the exhaust on my 99 and I'm totally satisfied.

ATS also has a ported housing which will all but eliminate the surge. From the research I've done I would go with the ported housing and the factory compressor wheel but if money is an issue since the housing is almost 500 $$$ you could get away with just the compressor wheel. I personally am trying to save up some money so I can replace my turbo all-together with the H2E.

If i do have a surge problem would it do that with the factory air box as well?
And would you feel the surge? because all I hear is noise the power is still very strong throttle response and accleration is slightly crisper with the new intake. I probably have less than 1000 miles with the new air intake and the stock intake made no noise at all. I guess what i'm getting at is will i do any harm to my truck if i do have surge problem? Its still under warranty i wonder if i should just take it in and have it looked at.Also I ordered my exhaust tonight so i should have that in 5 to 7 days they say, so i will see how that helps things. How difficult are these wheels to install? I'm a pipefitter by trade and work on pumps with turbines all the time. Im no diesel mech. but am mechanically inclined as long as theres not alot of close tolerances involved. Any other insight on my noise problem would be appreciated. Thanks for the replys. Tim

lilred,
I noticed you also have a stage 2 afe does your truck also make kind of a pulsating suction noise right before the turbo kicks in? Thanks Tim

You most likely had it before, you just couldn't here it with the factory airbox. Ford changed the turbo halfway through 99 to reduce whistle. The resulting problem was the surge. Your exhaust won't change it, neither will the intake. The only thing is the wheel or housing. It was there before, but with the open element air cleaner you notice the noise because its right up the intake tract from the turbo inlet. The crisper throttle response is because of the new AFE. Naturally any engine can and will benefit from a higher supply of cool air. Just put on your exhaust and enjoy it. When you're ready for the next upgrade find a compressor wheel and housing combo for the truck in exchange it out. It would be time consuming. I've never done it, but from my research it would take a skilled mechanic 4-7 hours to replace the factory housing and wheel. So save yourself a day when ready. I know my local Banks dealer charges 5 hours for this. And what I mean by skilled mechanic is not necessarily a diesel mechanic, just someone who knows their way around a tool box, and can follow a good set of install instructions. If you have a doubt about doing it your self, find a reputable mechanic and hire him.
