I drive like a granny, no jack rabbit starts, 65 on the highway with the cruise and I get 22+, in town 17+, towing anywhere from 9.5 - 16.5 depending on the load. I have a 94 250 4x4 with a 5 speed.

The difference in fuel economy with the different gear ratios is significant. The gear ratios aren't the only differences between these two specific trucks, but the different gear ratios do account for a lot of the difference in fuel economy.

I would expect to get at least 15-16 out of any PSD.(unless its a 6.4 with a DPF) Many acheive better fuel economy, but it really depends on the specific truck, and most of all your driving habits.
I got early 99 Crewcab 8'bed 6 speed
I ought it from private party for cash when asked previous owner about MPG's he said hes been getting 16-18mpg's
To my diaspointment on my first tank i just bearly made 12mpg i felt really ripped off and dissapointed i could feel a little skip and engine sounded loud all the time almosty like comuter train it was my first diesel and even all this issues pilled up it turned into good negotiation points and i got the truck for 8k us dollars it needed tires ball joints and good cleaning but since prewious owner drived it by himself cleanned beutifly rear sits was never used i think and passanger propably few times
guy had good mainatnce record from local frod dealler and fluid changes were up to date but was cheeap on other issued every 6 tires were diferent not bold but all mixed up hehe .
but goin back to milage i started with a skip it turned to be injector it passed buzz test but failed cct on number 3 i did that myself at 280$ from a diller i found out about hydlolocking from fluids that leaked in from fuel and oil galleys
after that repair i got 11.5 MPG i screamed WTF???? truck runs great so i thought that my exhaust is clogged i ordered turbo back 4" from MBPR (this was the best going togheter kit i ever ordered in my life everything matched with surgical precision. and the edge chip./......
Truck wake up alot but fuel milage didint change new tires witch 80 psi didnt change nothing either than when replacing noisy serpentine belt i noticed that fan clutch is stuck i called ford and they said 380$ auch !!! but i called local performance shop and te owner told me that it ould be hard to get but he refered that a customer of his ordered a electric fan kit from flexalite and due to miss understanding ( i though the price suppose to be 250$ but it was 650)i ordered it i didnt like the price when it arrived but i bite the bullet since i liked good relationship i had with shop owner and i never regret the decision.
ON my first tank i did 16.5 mpg and noticable power increases then after that the best i ever got was 17.8 mpg driving it under 65 mph and keeping under 2k rpms while accelerating i got 4:10 gears and i wanna to put an overdrive unit /gear spliter to shoot for low 20's
