Driving habit also contributes as well I would think. My truck (9000lbs) will usually be around 120-150 on a day when the temp is 70-80. ...but I'll hit 180 in heavy stop and go traffic.

That's back country roads, gravel, mixed broken pavement, hills, 20-40 MPH. It was about 65-70 ambient temp. Total round trip was about 15 miles... kinda surprised me that it got that hot... but never got the tork converter to lock up due to the speeds... that could have alot to do with it.
If the TC wasn't locked up you were really working the trans under those conditions. It is easier for the trans to pull a 12K trailer at highway speeds than a 2-3K trailer under 40 mph with TC unlocked. I would still install the 6.0 cooler if you plan on towing often.

here goes, in the spirit of "the only stupid question is the one not asked"... Will keeping the trans cool completely solve the problem with low speed hauling as far as wearing out the TC? Last summer while hunting i crawled all over mountainsides at speeds less than 35 and my tranny puked up a few times. i installed another tranny cooler, but still have the feeling my truck is the wrong vehicle for that task, or any other related chore, i.e. pushing snow on trails at low speeds for distances - and that a manual transmission is the correct tool for that job. i guess what i'm thinking is that i had better be prepared for premature TC burnout if i keep doing what i do, even though i'm keeping it cool.
