Yes there is a LPOP, that’s the pump that makes the around 50 psi oil pressure that lubes the entire engine just like on most all engines made over the last 100 years. As CSIPSD said, its behind the balancer. I thought 2 fellers with around 3,000 posts each might be trying to make a funny, especially after the comment about the HPOP being on the frame.

I've always just called them an "oil pump". & all the oil pumps I've ever replaced were run off a distributor eccentric. Haven't gotten that far yet on my 7.3 I just started taking apart.......but it's coming!!!

I guess the PSD engineers had trouble getting the oil pump to run right on the distributor shaft so they put it on the end of the crankshaft instead. Its actually fairly easy to get to but I haven’t heard of one failing, mine looked like new after 200,000, I replaced it anyway during my engine build.

......................................If I said "distributor shaft" what would that tell you? Are LPOPs expensive?

They rarely if ever "fail" they can get weak over time.

Is it possible for them to whine? I've had a mystery whine for a while now - does it with serp belt off (and it's not teh TC or tranny pump).

bump

The whine is VERY similar to power steering pump going bad - louder in the mornings. Many people have said it's not the HPOP but possibly the LPOP. Anything else that could cause a noise like this with serpentine belt off?

In all due respect, Sarasota, you should start a new thread asking the question about your whine. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but you'd get more responses with a new thread than with a dead one like this. Otherwise, I'm not 100% sure if an LPOP can whine. Possibly an HPOP. Have you checked the oil level in your reservoir?
