Dyno with Auto?

Ive see cars that have been dynoed with manual transmissions, usually peak power is measured in third? Correct me if if im wrong, ive nevered had any of my vechicles dyoned. So for my truck I would go through the gears with OD and then top third out? It would downshift though when i pegged it in third?

Give me the Dyno 101.....

Im going on the 27th to get it dynoed..

Thanks,

Matt

shut off OD and put it in second or find someone who make a program to lock out the converter so they can make an accurate reading.

I believe on manual vehicles it is measured in third because of the ratio is 1:1 or something like that, closests ratio in the trans.

In an auto, I never payed attention on how/what they actually do. I know some places make it so the converter wont lock up.

It would probably be a good idea to call the shop that is doing the dyno beforehand to see what their common practice in dyno operation is. Are you going to get dyno tuned or are you just getting rear wheel numbers?

Don't quote me, I'm not 100% and I'm not a dyno operator either.

When I dyno my auto we putt it in drive with the od turned off. This would be the lock out of converter and one to one ratio.

So u when u have it in third just slowly bring it up to redline?I know when i punch mine in third with OD off it will downshift to 2nd and some times 1st.

We dyno ours through all the gears...We start in 1st punch it and let it go all the way up to OD and around 72 mph then we let it coast to idle...then put it in part...i suppose you could always dyno it like a manual if you have a torque converter controller...start in first go to redline then shift it manually into 2nd go to redline then shift to third and go to redline...having OD off. Four speed autos third gear is 1:1 and thats why fourth is OD 1.79:1.

Ive always dynoed in OD to help load the engine and spool the turbo. Tony wrote a dyno specific program for me so that when the dyno operator put the hammer down the trans wouldnt downshift. The dyno operator shuts the truck down at what ever rpm you want, i usually run mine up to 3500rpms but dont know how your stock valve terrain would like that.

Are you guys talking about keeping the t/c from locking up? IF so why? That would not be anywhere close to an accurate reading.

Secondly, on a powerstroke, you need to run the dyno in OD, if you don't you will not get into the upper fueling tables and load up the truck like Luke said.

If you just put it on the dyno and then hammer it through all the gears you won't get an accurate reading either.

The operator, should put the truck on the dyno, get it into OD find the downshift point and start the run above that so there is no shift spike or anything.
