Problem in the COLD

Well as you may know, New England has had a very mild winter so far, it has not been cold at all, but this morning it was 8 degreese out which was a HUGE change from the weather we have been having. My question is this.... My 99 PSD leaks Diesel fuel from the drain tube coming from the fuel seperator bowl ONLY when its cold. The fuel drips out of the line (not really a steady stream, but a good drip) until the motor is warmed up and I drive it a little bit then it stops. I think the leak is caused by the o-rings inside the drain valve mechanism. As soon as the motor creates some heat and runs for a while the leak stops, which I think is beacuse the o-rings expand and create a proper seal.

Anyone out there come across this same problem?? I think I need to replace that valve and o-ring mechanism with a rebuild kit.

yep, the 2 orings need replaced. someone on here was selling them for a few bucks, or you can buy the fuel drain releif valve from for for around fifty, which is what i did. i needed to get it fixed and didnt want to mess around with trying to find the orings because they need to be able to handle fuel.

its a fairly easy change, theres four torx screws holding the body on, and be careful when you get it apart, you dont want to loose the lever mechanism, because the valve body is in a couple of pcs.
ill try to find the link for the install, its on here somewhere.

Yeah i live in Connecticut and I had the same thing happen to me, this is the first winter I've had my PSD and so I was wondering why it was leakin fuel. But i figured since it was about 6 degrees that had something to do with it. and it stopped once it warmed up

alot of folks think the new fuel is the cause (ulsd)
mine started leaking shortly after the rollout on the new fuel. and not just dripping, but a good flow. i guess the new fuel is thinner.
kinda makes you wonder what its doing to the rest of the fuel system.

Yea well fuel just isnt cheap enough for me to let it drip out of my motor and be wasted, i'll be changing that drain valve out tomorrow.

yep, I hear the same thing. A benefit of sulfur was it's ability to cause rubber to swell (and lubrication). I run Stanadyne Perfermance Formula all the time. does not have sulfur (per Fed Law) but it is supposed to "maintain" the fuel system. bottom line, use an additive or you will eventually have problems in older engines. fuel used to be 1000ppm sulfur, last year it was 500ppm, now in 2007 it's 5 ppm!!!! ouch!
