newbie with oil question need help asap VEGAS

Hello, I am a first timer with a 03 excursion with just over 140k on it. I would like to have the oil changed but I am unsure what is the "best" for it and do not know what the last owner was using. Does it matter what I put in it from this point on over what they currently have in it? We are leaving on a trip in a few days and need to get it done.

Also I live in Vegas and would like to know if anyone can recommend a shop here that wont rip me off on diesel work. I can wrench on gas all day long but would rather have a qualified person wrench on my diesel.

Welcome to the org! As for oil change, you don't have to worry if it has synthetic or conventional oil, just change it with whatever oil you prefer. I have run Rotella 15-40 in mine for the 25,000 miles I've owned my truck and am very happy with it. I Also run a Motorcraft filter.

Are there any real advantages to synthentic over conventional oil at this many miles? Thank you for your help.

I have had other vehicles like our 96 impala ss that we ran mobile 1 from day 1 with no issues but have had other hot rods that we picked up after the fact and ran mobile 1 with no real difference than running conventional.

I don't have any good answers for ya. I have always ran conventional oil and have no expirience w/synthetic. I've always gone on the theory if you change your oil on a regular basis you can't go wrong. A buddy of mine who is a rancher uses Conoco oil in everything (tractors, swather, backhoe, pickup trucks etc..) and hasn't had any engine failures. Just my 2 cents.

Run what your most loyal too. I personally run Royal Purple when I can afford it but the rest of the time I tend to run what ever is cheapest and my moter runs fine!
