Talking Newbe w/ ?s; Looking for PSD to pull 2 car trailer

Hi to all! Man, I love this Web site!! I've never owned a diesel truck before so I'm a little lost in quest for the right truck. I just got a deal on a 2 car ramp trailer, so now I'm looking for a rig to pull it with. I just looked at a 99 F350 dually, PSD w/auto.....152K miles, it runs goods, trans was rebuilt 10K ago. Truck seems to run out good but it didnt have the power I expected. I'm a little concerned about how it will act once hooked up to a loaded trailer. Are there any known problems with this year model? And, should I be looking for a straight drive truck? All opinions are appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Adding power is very inexpensive to do to these trucks. They will pull pretty good stock, but put a decent chip with a tow tune in, and you'll really wake it up while towing. If you're going to tow alot, definately get an EGT and trans temp guage for peace of mind.

Thumbs up Hi SOSRT

Welcome to the site. There's a lot of GREAT people here!!! I just bought a 350 PSD 4+4 dually this summer. I have a 22 ft travel trailer at 7,000 lb and it don't know it's hooked to anything. Mine is also an early 99 with 147,000 miles at this time. They are a lot of truck and as far as pulling I don't think there's anything to worry about. Good luck on what ever you decide.

Welcome to Powerstroke.org. Alot of people that arn't used to these truck fee they ar a little slugish when they firs jump in them. I thought the same when I got my 99, but don't let that fool you, when you need to pull it will. And as stated above, they are easy to wake up.---Gord

Welcome bud! You got to think of the mass of the truck you are moving and sometimes if the engine is cold the truck can be a little sluggish.....even Dodge and Chevy guys will admit that the Ford is the better truck to do any serious work, such as towing with. What gears did it have in the rear end? 410? Also ask about the bearings, they usually want to stop playing around 150k.

Welcome to the forum!

You would be surprised what a difference a tuner or chip will make. We just got a '99 F-450 that seemed a little sluggish compared to my personal truck. I put my SCT tune in it and we had a towing beast.

Welcome to Powerstroke.org!
If you haven't test driven a 6.0 liter, try it!
You won't think its sluggish.
