front axle joints question, help
On a 02 4wd, the shift button is on the dash not manual for 4wd.
Are the front U joints supposedtospin when the truck is in 2wd and the vehicle is being driven? for some reason i was thinking they did not spin while moving unless you were in 4wd? I am getting u joint noise at full turns or close to full turns when trying to park or something. Its the u joints. But they are spinnin gup front all the time. is this normal? thx |

I thought that if the hub was locked, it will spin. But if in auto, or unlocked in an aftermarket hub, it should not rotate. Someone else should chime in with more info.

stock hub, but its hard to turn off and on. I need to use large pliers to turn em?
if correct that they dont spin, i am glad. Would wrather figure out why hubs are locked? It does not feel like the 4wd is still on if it matters. But hubs are definately turning.... |

My hubs are stiff also, I have to work them for a minute before they unlock.
I think they will free spin if everything is working properly, mine seem to.

due to the mechanical drag on everything you may notice the shafts rotating with the wheels. try to spin the shafts by hand and see if they are actually locked in.

I have the exact same problem in my 01. Just recently I hear u-joint popping on sharp corners and my hub on that side I can't turn by hand and I can see the o-ring coming out. I was going to change the hubs to after market any suggestions on that?

how do i unlock the hub then?

If you jack up one side, spin the tire. If the axle spins when in 2wd the lockout is hanging up. On the auto hubs when set to auto they should disengage, when turned to lock they are locked. Its also possible the axle ujoint is tight causing the lockout to hang up. Ive replaced several like that.

its a manual hub, they turn real tight. I am willing to bet the hub is not allowing it to turn off somehow. How would i unlock that? goint out this am and going to try.

If the knob on the lockout is tight, Ive sprayed it with PB blaster or WD 40 to loosen them up. Their made out of aluminum so they will corode and be hard to turn.
