I switched to rotella 5w-40 synthetic in both my truck and van. Both of them have been starting alot easier this winter after the switch, especially the van.

well see i dont have any trouble with cold starts, i suppose due to the fact that it doesnt get very cold where i live.. i was just wondering if its a good idea to switch.. i have heard that switching can sometimes cause the motor to start usin more oil.. is the synthetic better for a diesel?

Do the switch. The first oil change you need to do at your normal interval, The second change you should do around 7-10K & send a sample in to get checked. They will tell ya how long your intervals should be. You will also notice your engine running smoother & quieter along with better MPG's I'd suggest using Schaeffer's 7000 Series 15W40 they're stuff is the best in my book!

it shouldn't.. not enough to worry about, it's not like your gonna loose half a gallon... you might see a half a quart or so but that is normal

I just put synthetic in my 4wheeler and I love the way it feels. Im going to make the switch in my truck the next oil change.

If I were you I would switch to synthetic but change it at about 2k-3k due to the fact that the synthetic is going to do a lot of cleaning of deposits and what not and will clog your filter pretty quick. Just did this in a customers 7.3 with 70K and he came back in at 3k for another oil and filter change. He hopes to go about 8k and do oil analysis to see how long he can go per change.
