**** Fuel tank lining failures on 2003 ****
I am trying to get a better understanding on the scope of this problem. We have about 50 Ford trucks, 99-07, mostly diesels and have seen an alarming trend in the 2003 diesels. Both of our 2003 E350 vans and now our 2003 F350 have had the lining on the fuel tank fail and flake off clogging the fuel system and requiring expensive repairs. We also have a 2003 Excursion which we dropped the tank to inspect and it seems ok. The problem in the E's and F's showed up in the last few months, all the trucks had about 70k miles on them at the time. We have 60/100k Base care through Ford and they don't want to cover it under that nor as a recall. Fuel wise, we use only Exxon/Mobil through a fleet account so I don't suspect anything there. I would like to hear from anyone else who has had this problem. I did see another post online where the dealer told the owner that someone vandalized his van by putting shredded paper into the tank... WRONG. Please post any info you have and maybe we can get Ford to acknowledge the problem and run a recall. Also, if you have a 2003, I would strongly suggest you drop and inspect the tank before the fuel system gets clogged all the way to the injectors.
