When can/should I use over drive ??

I am new to diesels and have been driving gas vehicles until now and normally I drive around in OD. Now with my diesel I find it really struggles if I am in OD, I always tow with OD off and it seems to be fine I can do 50 to 55 mph at about 2200 to 2500 rpm my exhaust temps stay around max 800 towing 7000 lb boat around town up a few hills. Tranny temps are always good around 125 to max 150.

I am getting ready to take a trip with the boat over a few passes and was wondering if I can hit OD on the flats or should I just keep it off for all towing time.

When I am around town empty is it ok to be in OD once I hit say 50 mph on the highway ? It seems to be sluggish when I come off the off ramp and to a light if I am in OD. Sometimes as I come off the highway I just take it out of OD manually hit the button and then all is good.

Sorry to ramble on I just don't want to do any damage to the tranny.

The only time you should turn the OD off is if it is shifting a lot between 3rd and OD. If you add a chip with a reputable tunner with a tow tune, you will never have to turn OD off.

I only take mine out of overdrive if there is a hill or passing lane coming up and I need to blow by someone.

PIS 175/80's, Van Turbo with EBPV, BD Billet Wheel
Lots of money spent at RiffRaff
Holley fuel pump, in tank mods, crappy riding leveling kit, DP-F6, 5 Gauges+Edge CS in dash, CB radio in Dash, over 100 goofy little mods
Still pretty slow, just less slow now.
