rim wheel question

I have an 02, if i bought wheels from say an 06 (17's) what would I have to do to make em fit? I know lug pattern is the same. I was told need to run a spacer?
any one know how thick? I dont mind spacers that just slide on then put the wheel on. I am hoping not thick spacers that require bolting on then bolting the wheel to them? Would be too costly, I am looking to get new tires and i can find some newer year rims with tires?
