I was having the same issue out here in s.l.c. utah. I called several local diesel shops that are reputable throughout the diesel industry and they all told me "to get used to it due to the ULSD" and that some stage 1 or 2 injectors would help some but not solve the problem. Definately not what i wanted to here, but not willing to get rid of my new hobbie over the deal. Try some different fuel stations it did help me a little, about 1-2 mpg better.

when I first purchased the truck I got pretty good fuel mileage. Seems to me it was about 475-500 miles on 24 gallons of fuel. that did drop to about 15 or 16mpg when I ran winter blend. But back to the injectors... Wouldn't I notice adverse performance w/ bad injectors or just poor fuel mileage? I dont know what my diff is 3:73 sound stock??? I could check it but I would have to say the only change in the vehicle has been the fuel mileage. Not the differential. And as far as feeding people BULL I just wouldn't/couldn't do that. I cant fix a problem that was misdiagnosed in the first place. Now having said that I've heard 18-20 was pretty average for not lead footing in a well kept psd. What is Statadyne and where do I get it? And this air filter I have os impossible to keep clean. I work in a very dusty environment so it seems like I'm cleaning it every third week or so.
So lets just say that 9-11 is all I can expect with my present configuration, is there any mods that JUST improve fuel consumption? Well, thanks for pondering my dillema

1st off, you're right about spoons, they're treacherous!!!
Now, I didn't mean to imply that you or anybody else lies about their mileage, or maybe I did. I don't remember as my head was in the bottle.
What's true is your mileage has gotten PROGRESSIVELY worse. You've checked the basics: tire pressure, dragging brakes, tranny slippage, filters, etc.
Dirty injectors? I don't know, COULD be a possibility but at your mileage I wouldn't count on it. I had a Cummins w/350k miles on original injectors. I would've bet the farm that new injectors would give me better MPG's but such was not the case.
As for Stanadyne, they're a major rebuilder of injection pumps and also make their own additives which get pretty good reviews on the diesel scene. call a injector/pump repair facility and they probably carry the stuff (if you haven't looked 'em up on the 'net yet).
You mentioned something about dirty air filters, what setup are you running? and no, you may not notice adverse performance with bad injectors. How's your engine oil and what are you using, it seems that Pstrokes are "oil sensitive". Anyways, get the Stanadyne or maybe Lucas injector cleaner, fill your emptied filter housing with it, and see if that helps.
You mentioned "cleaning" your air filter, you're not using a K&N are you? Shame on you if you are.

Well I can tell you that when the truck was new (to me) it seemed that my average mpg was 18-20. this problem has gotten progressively worse over the last year. thats how I ended up replacing u-joints. I use Rotella 15-40, new filter every time I change oil. Is this bad oil for the PSD? what does ford reccomend? Yes I am using a K&N intake w/ filter. I am not very fond of it because it requires so much cleaning. what is the recommendation for air filtration? I might add that the truck performance is outstanding currently ...I just get crap for mileage. I dont even get smoke when I load it up @ 20 lbs of boost. would I feel a tranny slip? I would think so. The u-joints need to be changed again maybe there is some drag there. Would you say that consistent fuel mileage is even possible?

Why did you do u-joints to begin with? If you have to do them again already they must have been cheap ones.

I have used Rotella, Mobile/Delvac and Chevron/Delo and my 95 liked the Delo the best. I now use Schaeffers 7000 for engine and use the Diesel Treat for fuel additive.

Rotella starts to break down around 3k miles and should be changed.

Check your up-pipes for leaks and remove/clean the intercooler pipes and boots.

If you think it is your injectors you can pull them and send off to Full Force to have the inspected, flowed and new o-rings. Unless you have money don't buy new ones right now.

Rotella is one of the best oils for the powerstroke (IMO) alot of guys on here swear by it. (i do) i run it in both my 7.3's. now about that filter you have you need to diych that puppy quick. K&N is knowwn to let some particles through, which will cause dusting of your turbo (not good). i just went back to paper filters by napa cause they are safe. but if i am not mistaking you need to pick up an air raid filter to replace your K&N it will go right on you K&N intake.
