Should I buy?

Ok so I have been wanting a powerstroke for a long time. I want to get a 99-00 ex. cab shortbed 4x4 auto. Mainly this because they have the forged rods and I know it also goes halfway into 01. Anyways I really want the 7.3, only thing is I love the new dark stone metallic, and the new front end. So I figured I could buy a 99-00 and change the front lights, bumper, grill, etc and then have it repainted. Plus if it is black I could just leave the engine compartment black and save a lot of work when painting. Anyways, I can't really afford the truck I want yet but I could trade in and get a 99 f150 (which I have had before but it was the stupid 7700 with 7 bolt wheels). I was just wondering what some of you guys thought about all of this. Should I wait for a few years or get a f150. Right now I am in college again and don't have a lot of money. I have a 94 z28 and a 2000 ford ranger. I like the ranger for the wife but it just sucks it can't tow very much weight when I sometimes need it too. Sorry for the long message but just been thinking a lot lately.

Are you talking about the 05-07 front end or the or the 08? The 05-07 front end is no more than a bumper headlights and grill could easily come across all that second hand on ebay or salvage yards withing a few weeks to month.

The 08 front I am not even sure about the frame mounting, but you are talking all new pieces from dealer, bumper grill headlights fenders, hood, and all supporting brackets, it has to be 3-5K in parts!! for a "look".

I would start off with a solid 7.3 that doesnt have a bad maintanece history, drive it, love it, grad college and when you arent strapped for $ get the truck you really want.

Oh ya the 05-07 and I know it would be easy that is why I was thinking this route. Well since I am back in school hopefully I can make more money next time I'm back in the real world. I was here for awhile then went to Wyotech for auto body and upholstery. Didn't get the best jobs but now going for veterinarian lol runs in the family. I don't know what I want to do lol.

I was in the same boat. I had a 01 ranger and everytime I need to tow something, I would have to barrow a bigger truck. I really couldn't afford a nice low mile newer rig. I ended up with the one in the sig because it was what I was looking to spend. I look back now and have no regrets. She got some miles on her and some scratch but it gets the job done.

No regrets with me either High mileage to an extent is not quite an issue if the truck was taken care of. I bought mine with 217k 8 months ago, now I am at 237 and change, popping in some bigger sticks and some hot tunes

Sweet, ya and the wife would have to drive it everyday so idk bout that lol. It would suck if something went wrong with it. They are kinda expensive to fix and it'd be our only vehicle. I'm still looking for that right one though!

blknt18, where'r you at? truck here around Portland are still pretty cheap due to fuel prices, but that'll change.
did you go to Wyotech in Laramie? Where's your vet schooling? Montana?
Anyways, on a students budget I'd sell the Z-28, keep the Ranger, get your wife a nice scooter for transpo, and drown my sorrows at the local watering hole! (until your a vet, then buy a '0? Powerstroke to tow your Defender out to your ranch where you keep your Arabian collection and allow Texans to come hunt when not catering bbq's for the Nature Conservancy )
