Those that have modified their cup holders?
Ok, I have an early 99 truck with the lovely cup thrower. I went ahead and purchased a brand new 01+ cup holder the other day off of ebay for a great deal, but it was grey and I need tan. Well I figured no big deal I'll just paint it like my gauge pod. The only problem with my gauge pod is that some of the paint has chipped off where the pod meets the dash board, so I was worried about how well a painted cup holder would hold up. I asked around and was told to first spray an adhesion promoter and then paint it. I went ahead and did the adhesion promoter and to my horror it ate the textured finish right off of the face plate. I tried like crazy to get it off but it was to late and the damage was done.
Well I went ahead a purchased another 01+ cupholder and I was going to paint it without the adhesion promoter, but it still has me worried. Then I remembered reading a while back about a couple people that modified their old cup thrower face plate to attatch to the new 01+ cupholder and all was well. I have been looking at this avenue and it looks doable but I have a tendancy to underestimate projects, so I am here asking if anyone has done this? If you have or know someone that did is there any possibility to get some pictures to better illustrate the modification that was done? Thanks, Mike |

I checked at the dealers around my area and they all want $90+ for an 01+ cup holder. I only spent $30 on each of these two so I'm still ahead, I guess. I would post pics but I screwed the thing up worse than it was already. I tried to just sand it all smooth and paint that, but then I had sanding scratches that you could see. It has really been a pain in the ***, even though it should have been easy.

I bought an inexpensive gray one off eBay this Summer with plan of painting it. Never remembered to pick up paint and have gotten use to the gray now. I guess I'll watch your progress to see if I should do something else. I'm just so happy to have a functional cup holder I hardly notice the gray patch. I couldn't see a reasonable way to move just the plastic face plate but didn't try either. Not sure why the gray ones always go cheap and the tan/brown ones go high, guess not to many gray interiors around. Jeb |

I'm not getting it. My late 99 has has arms on it and so did my friends early 99. As far as I know neather of the truck were replaced with 01 cupholders. But I can only conferm for as long as we have owned the trucks. I didn't like the fact that I only had 2 cupholders, I found on ebay a tray piece thing that slides in the centerconsole that has 2 cupholders and a pocket. Probly the best thing I bought for my truck. |
