Question Which Oil Type

Hello

I am currently running 15w40 Delo oil in my 2001 F350, here is Texas. I will be going hunting up north next month and expect singles and low teen temps.

My truck is up for an oil change, would it be wise to switch to 10w30, stay the same, or use another weight?

Thanks

You could always go with a great winter weight like straight 30. I wouldn't recommend using 10w-30. It's not engineered for diesels.

You need to make sure that the Delo is "low ash" oil. otherwise you will have problems with coaking (large carbon deposits) in the intake, egr and turbo. I would recomend staying with Motorcraft!! (i am a ford master diesel technician)

Delo 10W40 is a diesel grade oil, I would not bother with switching to a lower weight oil or synthetic for a few days in the cold. The truck may start a little slow, and might want to give it 2-5 mins to and warm up a little but it doesnt warrant changing your whole oil regime. Also as the tech says, Diesel oil is a special grade, you willl end up doing more damage to your motor by running a non diesel grade oil in it vs an oil that is viscuss.

You can run 10W30 rotella in your stroke... Ford actually shipped out the 7.3 psd in the superdutys with 10W30 diesel oil... Rotellas is bonded to work in diesel engines... Even regens...

While this is from awhile ago I can not let this go unchecked...Ford or Motorcraft makes a 10w-30 Power Stroke Diesel engine oil that is recommended to be used when the teps are below 30*F, how is that not engineered for diesels? When its 0*F and a blistering windchill, and you go to start your truck with 15w-40, you are going to wish you had 10w-30 in it.

Although this too, is from a while ago, I would like to retort. My apologies, AJF. I had no idea there was 10w-30 for diesels. The only diesel oil I can find in Rhode Island & southern MA is 15w-40 & straight 30. The only 10w-30 I can find is for spark ignition engines as diesels pick-ups arent' as big in my entire state & possibly most of the region. Before you come out with an ignorant answer like this again, why don't you just give the statement, instead of giving good information mixed with belittlement. You just sound like one of those know-it-alls who gets off on it. Thank you & have a nice day!

-Guy who starts his truck no problem with 15w-40 in Rhode Island winters & can't stand 'super stars'.
