Service Engine Soon light

WHOOPS -- somehow I have two different log ons -- I will deleter the Rookie one...
I put in a DP Tuner chip and a 4 inch exhaust and gauges -- I punched the pedal to show off (the truck was not all the way warmed up) and it backfired then ran rough for a while then cleared up. The Service Engine Soon light is still on -- I disconnected the batteries and reconnected them but it is staying lit. I think there is more black smoke then usual. I am about to take a trip. Is this something that I should be concerned about? I do have black soot around the tailpipe.

the only thing you can do in these situations is hook it up to the obdII. if you don't have one you can definitely go to auto zone, and i think they scan it for free, and give you a print out on what code[s] it pulled up.

OK -- I just got back from NAPA to have the codes read. On the way there I tried the "Stock" position of the chip and it ran terribly -- unless I forget how underpowered stock is compared to 80 HP Econ. It actually seemed to get better in stock the longer I kept it there (maybe wishful thinking?). The guy plugged in the reader and the Service Engine Soon light went off. (He might have selected "Clear all COdes" but he said that he didn't. ANyway drove 3 miles back home and the light didn't come back on. Is it cured?

Still having problems

The light came back on and when I put the chip into "Stock" position it runs real rough. I will take it back to NAPA tomorrow and re-read the codes to see if it tells me anything this time. Any other suggestions?

HOORAY

Well I went back to NAPA and they came up with two codes P1247 aND P 1248 -- NO TURBO BOOST AND LOW TURBO BOOST. So I figured that I blew up the turbo. I got home and opened the hood and found that the cold air side feed to the Turbo was separated -- evidently when it backfired it came apart. I put it back together and everything is fine. I just recently installed the boost gauge and really didn't know that 1 pound of boost wasn't OK. Now I got plenty. Thanks to those who responded.

I would think your truck would be smoking like a freight train with no boost..., which is probably why you said "I think there is more black smoke then usual."
