J/w why? With the money you'd spend and the holes you'd have to cut... why not just get a built auto tranny that will out pull, out live, and outdrive a 6spd?

Word Marty! I'd take that cash you'd spend on the conversion and call ATS and have one hell-of-a tranny built that will hold ANY amount of power possible. Also, a stock 6 spd is really only good for about 400HP. AND when it goes out, which it will eventually, your looking at at least $3000 for a rebuild with stock parts, more if you go with better parts/cryo-treated parts. Also, a good clutch is going to run about $600+. I know, I payed $3700 for a stock rebuild with my case and an upgraded LUK clutch which is good for about 350-400HP.

You are right, ive been looking around at both options.....
I just rebuilt my tranny about 15k ago with and put a shift kit in it, I like the auto for driving around town, the occasional race and traveling, but I wish i had a six speed when I tow. I guess im a control freak...... Ive got the shift kit in it and it shifts somewhat firm but im looking for the next upgrade.Decisions..Decisions I work on cars for a living but trannies are not my thing........... If i kept the auto i would like to upgrade the convertor,Ive heard good things abut the brianstruckshop parts. I might do a convertor from them...... I basically looking for ideas and suggestions................................ |

I have the 6 spd and sort of wish I had the AUTO. Yes the stock manual is stronger, but it is a PITA to launch and I feel like I'm slipping the clutch too much. Also, the auto would be soo much better when me and the girl and driving around.

True true, Thats funny, all my buddies who have and auto want a 6spd and vise versa.......... Ill probably look around at some convertors and start with that, the problem is that they are all expensive for a good one. Anyone know how much the BTS one is?

As for the mods and the towing, go with a transgo tugger kit, a chip that has specifically a "TOW TUNE" not 50,75,90 etc... there is a difference in the actual programming. If you don't get a chip you can do the T/C lockup mod and that can help some too. I let my TC lockup when going downhills with a load in tow and that controls it nicely. Also, BTS makes ONE HELLL of a trans and if you were going built, that's who I'd personally go to. The Torqueshift is something else all together, its actually got a brain (computer) lol... I'd ask "sea71" aka Shane about his install, he's not a tranny man but has installed a shift kit and I believe is installing the transgo tugger kit w/aftermarket T/C sometime this week. I'm sure he'll have something to say about it afterwards. Anyways, hope this helps, I can get you links on some of the above info if you want. |

I think you will be pleased with the work that BTS does on your truck and you are not that far from his shop. Good luck. |

Just sell your truck and buy a 6 speed truck. It would be a lot easier and a lot cheaper. And a lot better. I would be really surprised if your 7.3 was over 400 hp anyways so you don't have to worry about blowing it up.
