whooshing sound after exhaust install
hey guys,
I just installed an MBRP 4" exhaust system and at about 1500 rpm's I get this whoosh whoosh sound. Like the turbo kicking in but not really. I only get it when giving her gas (not coasting.) It also seems to hesitate when this happens. Another thing I noticed is that this only happens after the engine is warm but after driving for about 1/2 hr it stops. I have checked all conection to make sure everthing was tight but I couldn't find anything. Any ideas? |

Sounds like turbo stall/surge similar to what I expirenced last night towing a dodge home. Had the cruise on going up hill with dodge in tow at about 65 and the truck wanted to go faster but the cruise was on and it was swooshing and it's really hard to describe it but I was going to grab the video camera but decided i'd better not let the turbo do that because I know it's not good for it.
I also have a 4" MBRP TB kit with open element intake - did not experience this when I was complete stock. I'm thinkging WW and ATS housing if it keeps it up! |

COngrats! You got Surge!!! (hehehe)
Mine does it too. It sucks. Just get a Wicked Wheel. I need to get mine ordered. Maybe after my trip to Texas Next week. |

I was just curions as to what the noise is and why it happened after the exhaust was put on? Is it going to hurt anything if I don't do anything about it?

Your hearing it now because your turbo is breathing better. The Stock compressor wheel is not designed well and when it gets to it's stall (surge) point it is actaully kicking the air back through the intake tract backwards. It does put stress on the turbo shaft. Mine is doing it too. When you hear it start to surge, just back off the throttle. And don't try to do it on purpose.

whoosh whoosh sound
I have the Silverline 4 in Turbo back, no cat only muffler with 5 in tip and mine does the same thing for the first 10 to 15 min. I will not be doing anything to the truck tell after 100,000 miles.
