Hank,
Call BS on whatever you want but you won't offend me!! I have been around these trucks way to long. I know they are capable of and what they aren't, I also don't believe everything I read on the internet. The person I was speaking of above is named Dave Whitmer, he is a member of another forum I was very active on for years, and I have spoken to Dave on several occasions, the last when he was building the canopy for his truck.
Here is a link to the add in Diesel Power featuring his truck!

2000 Ford F350 Power Stroke Diesel Truck Mileage - Diesel Power Magazine

It seems Dave has now cracked 26 mpg, just barely but he is there. What the article doesn't mention is all the weight that was taken out in order to do this, I know the bench was removed and a single bucket seat was used, the headlights had aerodynamic pieces added to them, every corner that could be smoothed out was done, all seams were taped and evern the wheels had cone type pieces to go from the center cap to the outside of the wheel to cut down on the wind resistence from the lug nuts!! Read the article, he is running at 1450 rpm at 60 mph with his custom 3:08 rear end, no spare tire, IIRC he had removed more than 900lbs of weight from the truck!! the AC was removed, clutch fan etc...... This man has been working on squeezing every tenth of a gallon that he can for years now!! Do you really believe a stock truck can come within 1 mile and 7/10ths of this.
I will say I don't know the route he took or the terrain, but it was a short trip, so if he coasted downhill both ways and had a very strong tail wind maybe, but I still doubt it!!

Sorry, my opinion, and I am sticking to it!!
Read the above article and ask yourself if you still believe a stock truck can run almost 24.5 mpg!!
Have a Nice Day

NCH

3.08 gears are off the shelf, Yukon, Ford, etc., not custom...but I agree. CC/SB w/ no major MPG mods is definitely not going to get near 24mpg. TS chip is not aimed for highest MPG, Dave has a special MPG tune that he runs IIRC.

well i just got back, and double checked this time with my GPS. filled up at a station on 21 west. from there went 78.9 miles to the station right by my house where it took 3.089 gallons to fill my tank back up. that comes out to 25.54224668 miles/gallon. and on the way back i had cruise at 70 the whole time, exactly 2k rpms. not sure exactly what's going on but the drive is mostly flat the entire way, wind could be a factor but i don't know. all i know is i did the math and this is what came out

That's awesome! The previous owner of my truck (very similar to yours) said it got 20-21 MPG right off the showroom floor. With a little more air, bigger exhaust and a chip and I am not surprised at all. The most important thing you have done, or actually didn't do, is put on oversized tires. Makes a huge difference. These trucks can get decent fuel mileage. Your's proves it. Enjoy!

I'm wondering if my mileage will go down now since I put 285's on. I don't think will make that much difference

with 265's on mine with 139000..before the programmer or any mods, drove to Myrtle Beach with the family ,avg.21.2mpg. Roughly 70mph.keeping as close to 2000 rpms as possible..with some tricks,i would say its able to be done. BTW ..everyones engines wear and tear will make all the difference in the world.A pos engine will not get crap for mileage ,where as a tight engine ,would have to be better on mileage..just a thought.

There you go. Your information agrees with the previous owner of my truck. It could be that the truck Kevin speaks of just wasn't a good one to start with, especially one to try to beat a fuel economy record? Every truck is different..one of the reasons Tony Wildman is reluctant to advertise HP increases with his chip. I get such poor fuel economy, I am always asking others what they get. Stock 7.3s can get 21 MPG all day long. Add a few mods to improve this and keep your foot out of it and 24 MPG is certainly a reasonable possibility.

yeah, and i don't know. there still is a little room for error in the calculations (maybe if some fuel pump shutoffs are more sensitive than others?), and believe me I find this hard to believe also, but i'm just saying those are what I got from the numbers.

I was looking at the new Ford Flex and decided against it because of the mileage. Ford is bragging about 24 MPG, and in my opinion there is no reason a vehicle that size can not get well above 30.

And please keep the smart alec station wagon jokes to yourselves, I am looking to replace an aging Explorer with a family type vehicle.
I wish Ford would make a deal with someone for a 3 cylinder diesel engine that is quiet and gets 45 MPG in a light car.

jay,
i've often wondered about that too. i guess it's just america's negative predisposition to diesel vehicles.
