glow plugs

just wanna hear opinions. do you guys replace your glow plugs as tune up items? some people have told me they don't because they find them to be too expensive to replace as a routine maintenance item. my best friend who had my truck before me replaced them once already,

I have yet to replace my glow plugs, but will be doing so in the next week or so as my #5 has finally given out on me. I plan on replacing them all-I think after 5 years I've about gotten all I can get out of them

Mine are almost 9 years old now and still working great. I don't replace anything just for the heck of it, unless I have something torn down already. I would't call $10-$13 for each GP expensive either!! Of course while your in there I would change them all. I would only use the Ford units, don't use the Bosch GP's they are junk. If you look in the maintenance section I have a sticky on how to troubleshoot the GP system.

i only figred they were $20 the people who think they're expensive don't know what they are talking about. i was just wondering if people replace em every 100k or whatever like people would do with spark plugs on gassers, and replacing things like belts and hoses.

Maybe if you lived in the artic where your life depended on the truck starting, but since we can plug our trucks in and they will start wih no GP's at all. Let's see a gasser start with no spark plugs!!

This is the time of year again. Hornet, I imagine you'll be referencing that thread a lot in the next few weeks/months....
I seond that about not replacing anything that ain't broke. I think you don't run into any real trouble with them until like 2-3 or more of them are bad IIRC.

Southpaw you are correct, hard start/no start threads will start becoming morepopular as well as "where is my block heater plug" Yeah a PSD will fire up with 3-4 bad gp's depending on how cold it is, this is the biggest factor!! Heck in many of the southern states they aren't even needed all winter, while up North everyone is needed!! I always suggest the heavy duty Stancor relay anytime a GPR is bad. The #109 from Napa is a popular cheap replacement, but I got tired of changing them yearly. Stancor has been in for 3 winters and still going strong. One look at this thing next to the stock one and you can see why!!

My truck does not have a block heater. I have never had trouble starting it even when it was 18 degrees out. However, now that #5 and #7 are shot, I am thinking it'd be more cost and time effective to do them all before it does get cold here

I don't think I've ever seen a 7.3 without a block heater. I've seen some missing the cords.
