02 excursion cold start

My excursion doesn't start when below freezing without being plugged in. I checked the glow plugs and they are good. What else could cause it to not start cold?

Worn injectors can give the same symptoms of bad glow plugs.
Also test cranking rpm. You could get lucky and have a weak battery or dragging starter

I'm pretty sure my batteries and starter are good. I have the new style glow plug controller, how do I tell if it is bad?

Switching over to 10w30 helps a lot. Get a western plow relay to replace your stock one $20 and it works great on mine.

I don't think I can use the plow relay, can I, I have the new style module? I don't have any trouble starting my 96 truck.

Unplug the EOT sensor then cycle the glow plugs on and measure the voltage drop between the two large terminals on the relay. On a good relay the voltages should be within a few tenths of a volt of each other

No you would have to use a scan tool or a clamp on DC ammeter
