These things are pulling 13 MPG stock. So you're putting double fuel into it to go half as far. Seems to me that's about the same as if they didn't put any of the emissions junk into these trucks. Such a waste of time, money and engineering IMO.

My boss just got one and well, let's just say "disappointed" is an understatement for how he feels about mileage on his 6-4. I said he should straight-pipe it and watch the MPG's rise nicely.

If money wasn't a concern I would buy a 6.4 (and straight pipe it) in a heartbeat.
BUT then again...man I love my seven-three!!!

think about it. the gov wants it to burn cleaner and spit out less crap right? well they did that. um wait... who is tightly tied into the gov? yep the oil companies! so pitch it as clean and enviro friendly, wile they stuff all that extra cash in their packets!!!!

I read ALOT when buying my truck. I spent lots of time on cummins sites, duramax sites and PSD sites. I read all about the different engines and trucks. I picked my 7.3 for one reason, its bullet proof and will last me about forever if I take care of it. O and the other reason... everywhere you look in Texas, PSDs own the roads! so they must be doing something right!

now remember that the 7.3 takes lots of money to step it up to the power levels of the newer trucks, but to me, if i want to go fast ill get on one of my bikes or in my wrx. Its a truck dude!! My buddy has a 07 duramax and its freakin FAST! but my WRX will still smoke him in a line or around the twisties

the 7.3 is a nice engine that will last if you take care of it. Watch out for too much power.... One thing I did not read too much into when I got mine... If you are planning on swapping turbos you will need forged rods. after late 2000 ish they switched to Powdered metal rods and they tend to brake and put a hole in the block at about 400 hp. Simple tuners, intake and exhaust you will be ok, but too much after that, any 7.3 after 2000/2001 will not last. so if you plan on building a monster (400 hp plus) you will need a 99 or early 2000 (unless you want to swap engines). if you stick with the simple mods and want a truck that lasts, a later 7.3 is the way to go.

as someone who has owned both a 6.0, and a current 7.3 owner i gotta say 7.3. i've only had it since january when it had 109k miles. now it's got 154k, and no problems. the transmission was toast when my best friend signed it over to me. that and a cps is all thats gone wrong with it other than regular maintenance. i think nothing of taking it from jersey to california every few months. while the cps does go out more times than not i don't think there are as much of a variety of problems as there are with the 6.0. the 6.4 sounds like it's got it's fair share of problems too which is never good when you buy a $35k-$40k dollar truck. whether it's a free warranty repair or not. my 6.0 did really good, and i disagreed with all the naysayers. never had any warranty work or anything. once i got to 83k the egr gave me problems, injectors, blown piston in the motor, wiring harness. after that i got rid of it.

Case in point... I was talking to a fella yesterday at the job site, he's drivin' a '06 F-550 ext cab truck with the 6.0. Wants his 7.3 back, but the first thing he told me after I told him I had one, is "don't chip it, when I sold my old truck, with 206K on it, the person (I assume an uneducated driver) sold it to chiped it and blew it up in a few weeks." I'm guessing the person didn't watch the EGT gauge (if it even had one) and melted the pistons... this story gives the 7.3 a bad rap, and even 'chips'... but I will say as others have, all/any motor can have problems... but the driver can make a good thing bad.

I have my 2000 7.3 with about 166K on it now, with a chip (DP Tuner! love it!) and expect a long life from it... I drive smartly, watch the gauges, and have fun!

Best of luck finding a truck you like, and more importaintly, if I remember right, your off to the former USSR? Hope that works well for ya... are you getting this truck to take there? That would be cool...
Haha, I am off to the former USSR, but the truck won't be coming. I'll be working on a production platform off of it's coast. Thanks for the opinions, lots to think about as far as what my next rig will be.
