Long road trip prep work
Going to start working on my truck and getting it ready to go across the country. Im making an 1800 mile trip from TN to AZ in 2 days. I will be pulling a loaded 6x12 tandem enclosed trailed loaded with all my crap.
Lately I have been having some very high Trans temps for driving unloaded. When I first bought the truck I couldn't get it over 140. Now Im hitting 190 in about 17 miles and holding that steady most of the time but sometimes it will get up to 220-240. Im nervous about pullin this trailer with it doing this. So Im going to flush the trans and take the trans cooler out and clean it up real good. I would put a 6.0 trans cooler in it but I don't have the 150 bucks to spare right now. I have had been told differant things about which trans fluid I need to run. So what do I need to put in it? Second, I had alot of oil saturating my IC Boots at the IC so I pulled those off and cleaned those really well. Can I pull the IC and flush it out with something to get rid of any excess oil? I am going to do the CCV mod, don't know why I have waited so long to do this, at the same time. Also when I pulled my IC tubes out to clean the boots the one on the passenger side has some deep rub marks in it from rubbing on the wire loom over the past 10 years. I am thinking about rapping them in Header wrap to help stop this from continuing. As far as I can see there are no holes. I am going to change the the diff fluids as well so what is a good weight to go with? I am going to install hawk brake pads as well. I am considering flushing the coolant system and install a coolant filter in the process. I have everything I need for this except for a filter that will work for a filter and a bracket to mount it. Anybody have a write up on this? Of course I will be changing the oil, rotating and balancing the tires and making sure the alignment is within spec. Do I seem like I have everything covered or am I missing something? Thanks GUys. |

In all honesty don't worry about the IC right now. It isn't going to hurt anything, it's just a mess!! Wait until you are ready to do the CCV Mod and then pull everything out at once, clean it, and then put it all back and install the CCV Mod. Did you receive the info I sent you on the CCV Mod? Cleaning the IC isn't going to help if you leave the CCV dumping into it, and dumping a hose to atmosphere isn't the right way of doing the CCV Mod and can be more of a mess than they way Ferd planned it. You can also have problems with the boots resealing after you remove them. You don't want to be blowing hoses every time you hit a grade!! A trick is to spray the inside of the hoses and plumbing, wait for it to get tacky and then assemble, this will help keep things together. But in all honesty I wouldn't worry about it until you are ready to do the CCV mod. I knew your bypass was shot, that's two members in the last week with the same problems, maybe we are going to have a run on bypass lines. Be glad you caught that now or it would have, not maybe, it would have cost you a trans within the first five hundred miles of your trip!! If I didn't send you the CCV Mod info PM me. NCH |

Dont forget to have a bunch of tools with you under the seat or some place easy to get to. Nothing is worse then being stuck on the side of the road wishing you had a screw driver or a xx size socket! o and a flash light!
if and when you can, I would suggest you get a 6.0 cooler. Got mine on craigslist for $50 bucks. I got lucky. or a cooler from diesel site for 120 ish when you order that bypass valve ![]() and Nchornets ccv mod is sweet. I have it on my truck and I would do it again if I got another 7.3! |
