white smoke/no start/ fuel question

A friend of mine put new injector o- rings in his 2001 7.3 f250.. It ran about 15 minutes then would not restart.
replaced valve cover gaskets due to them not replaced at the time of injectors and would not stay plugged in.
Also fixed a couple of other oil leaks for him in the process of putting back together.
Now here is the problem, Cranks over fine (new batteries also), after glow plugs time out then crank (new glow plugs also and relay)-- cranks real long then tries to fire will run for a few seconds but then dies out like it is starving for fuel. When cranking I am getting puffs of white smoke from the exhaust pipe especially the closer it gets to firing (raw diesel fuel not being burned -- smokes out the garage).
Now the question is could good fuel pressure but low volume due to something being plugged in the tank cause this problem -- heard of the internal sump having a screen problem and/or blockage possibly causing a fuel volume problem

Sounds like air in the fuel system to me. Went thru this about a year ago, was pickup tube in tank. Remove fuel filter and cycle key, is there fuel in bowl is it foamy? That's what gave it away for me was foam in filter housing.

thanks, I'm looking into that now, I can tell you that the fuel bowl fill up real slow if you drain it then take the cap off, usually they should fill up faser than this does under 50 psi of pressure, the only other thing that is leading me to this is that when the fuel is pressurizing upon inital key up it sonds like the fuel pump is "gurggeling" (bubbling) about halfway through the initial key up before the fuel pump kicks off --
I'll check on this tomorrow and let you know what I come up with

Well everyone, I said that I would get back to you today, and here is whet I found, first of all the tank did have a problem in the pickup assembly, so I went ahead and did the modification for that, also the modification for the filler tube whle I was in there. also added a suction pre-filter before the frame rail fuel pump. after modification I now have a solid 60 psi of fuel pressure, and great volume, now the truck will start and run, But not the greatest --- have one hell of a fuel knock,
Plugged the scanner back into it to run a fuel injector balance test and found out htat this poor bastered also has 3 bad fuel injectors, didn't show up on the fuel injector buzz test because they responded with the pcm communication.
Now the final step is to replace the fuel injectors, this is what I had been leading up to the whole time but had a world of other minor problems to fix before I could condem fuel injectors 100%
NEW QUESTION keeping this thing stock with a very mild towing chip will factory replacement reman fuel injectors be ok for the replacement, The people around where I live say to buy top of the line injectors, But he is not wanting to go crazy in fixing this, he only tows at the most about 6000 lbs when he hauls his jeep or four wheelers to the dunes in Michigan inthe summer

Did you find #1, #3 and #8 show up as bad ? I get that all the time due to my chip. Truck runs great though.

eliminated chip out of system to make sure it was not that, that way it tries to start with stock program

Thats still common to get those codes. Its a normal ford cps issue. With or without the chip. Usually its #3 and #8. There's prolly still lots of air in the hpop system from changing injector O-rings. It will take about an hour of driving and a few wot runs to get all the air out.

yeah i cn agree with you on air in the hpop system but the problem is that it also wont stay running long enough to possibly get the ir out of the system, the longest it has ran since back together was about an hour before it went limp and got towed to me, then the longest I have had it running is about 15 minutes after I fixed a bunch of other things for it and only long enough to do an injector balance test which is showing weak injectors,
Did fing a reciept with the previous owners name and phone number under the rear seat, finally got him to admit he used to run on the High end of the chip most of the time,
when I first looked at this truck about 4 months ago it ould run like a raped ape but start hard, this chip in it makes enough power turned up on top to smoke the clutch in
4th and 5th gear, other people I hace talked to said that the injectors have gone bad, under a buzz test they are very a very faint buzzing sound, checked against another similar diesel today with another 50k over this one and the injectors buzz real loud like a woodpecker and has no problems running whatsoever, -- any other ideas?????
