6 spd manual gearing

Does anyone else find the gearing in the 6 spd manual kind of annoying? Low gear is supposed to get a heavy load moving, but it's a long throw to pop it out of that left column and up into first. By the time I do that the truck is almost at a stop again especially going up hill. First to second is fine but shifting from second to third is a longer throw and the gearing is farther apart so I have to wind the engine higher in second in order to get the rpms up in third. Third to fourth is fine but fourth to fifth is kind of the same as second to third.

I wish it was the same as the old granny low four speeds like an NP 435 where low to first is a quick shift straight down. The 6 speed is a good tranny, I just think they could have designed the pattern a little better, and put the gearing a little closer together especially on the longer throws. Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling. Does anyone else have some thoughts on this.

I agree 100%!!! My 05 is a complete dog with a good load behind. Second to third is way to far apart.

yeap dodge had it figured out with the low to first straight down, then putting reverse off by itself to never be seen until needed.

I'm not too sure it's the length of the throw that does it, but the split in ratios isn't very good, or at least could be alot better. I tow heavy alot, and I never noticed it being that bad, but then maybe I run it higher up and shift faster?

I'm gonna agree, maybe you're just not winding it out as much cause I dont seem to have problem with mine

I don't mind the shift between low and 1st, I found you can shift that pretty quick once you get the feeling. The ratio between 2nd gear and 3rd gear is my biggest issue if I'm trying to keep my shifts below 2000 with a trailer on. I just wind out 2nd gear a little higher so I have enough rev's in 3rd gear to bring the boost up quick.

I am going to have to agree, it does seem long. Sometimes I will just be in my own little world and shift right into third not paying attention....THAT SUCKS!!!
