DEISEL THUNDER in Spokane

Yesterday was DEISEL THUNDER in Spokane, WA. This affair is sponsored by EDGE PRODUCTS and a host of other manufacturers, garages and custom shops. I didn’t have time to participate in all the functions and missed the races but I did have my 2000 Ford F-350 dually dyno’d at DAVIS DIESEL.

There were four categories of entry for the dyno competitions: Stock; Slightly Modified; Bombed and Unlimited. I entered in the Slightly Modified category because my Ford has a Superchips Tuner, AFE Intake and a Magnaflow Exhaust. The limit in this class is 400 HP – three contenders broke out of the class. I, on the other hand, broke under my class – my truck ran a lousy 253 HP. This was the lowest of all contenders, in all classes!

This explains the poor performance at the low end. I thought something was wrong with my truck. With all the stuff I’ve added, there should have been 320-350 HP. Now, it was explained to me that all manufacturers rate the horsepower at the flywheel – today we are measuring at the rear wheels. This amounts to a twenty percent or more loss – and a dually, one-ton is going to have more loss.

Turns out, the Stock class had only two entries and they needed three to complete the prize schema. So my demotion from my entry class was a good thing – I received a prize for placing in the Stock class. The prize: “The EDGE product of their choice.” Yahoo! (Actually, that slogan might be copyrighted – don’t know if we can say that.) As I said, my truck performs poorly at the low end but beats anything in mid to high ranges – especially when towing. Now I know what the problem is – and EDGE just gave me a partial cure. My truck needs more horses, pure and simple; and I think we’re going to start with EDGE JUICE and ATTITUDE!
