Something Wrong

Ok my Co-worker has a 2000 F-350 Crew Cab Long Box, 4x4 7.3L. But he is only getting 12-13 mpg.

He has the banks chip, ( not the selectable one though). He has 4 inch banks exhaust, and banks gauges for egt and trans temp.

His truck runs great. But gets poor fuel mileage. The only thing I can think of is he has 4.10:1 gears in the axles.

I say this because my truck gets 18 mpg on average. But I have 3.73:1 gears. even though mine is a short box that should not make that big of a difference.

Am I correct to speculate that his poor mileage is from the 4.10:1 gear ratio.

I dont think the 4.11s are the only culprit, I would suspect clogged fuel filters or something like that as well.

4.11 will hurt the mileage though, usually like 2-4 mpg less.

I get about 12 all-city with the mods in my sig and I drive like you do big. I have 4.10's ... What I'm wondering though, you didn't say he has an intake, that could be part of it too...? Could even be tire pressure maybe, even front end alignment, I wanna say since he may not be the kinda guy to check that stuff as often as he should considering the banks junkie he seems to be But I won't. LOL!

He is a maintanence freak when it comes to his truck. Religous oil changes every 5,000 miles, religous fuel filter changes with the oil changes, Air filter cleaned every oil change, the truck is incredible as for the looks and maintanence is. He is worried about the mileage being up around 160,000 and planning a trip to alaska next summer. He plans on towing his 5th wheel 30ft camper with this truck all the way there. I told him I would be worried about the brakes going out before the engine breaking or trans breaking. Being his trans is built by the same guy that built mine. So I know that is solid and good to go. He is an older guy and doesn't really need the power or smoke. He likes his banks set up. But I told him remove the chip and see what he gets for milage.

Well I take back what I said then, and I won't be so quick to assume. But that's a good idea, does he have a good intake? A clean filter is good but does it breathe enough?
