truck purchase

I am looking at buying a 99+ power stroke diesel. i know above 2000 have the pmr which i should stay away from. what else? im either torn between the powerstroke or the cummins. I know the cummins problems but what years are the best and what did they change on the powerstrokes?

power. reliablilty. it will be pulling a fullsize chevy offroad truck and trialer. maybe 8-10k lbs maybe more. I am a diesel mechanic if that means anything. I do like the cummins better i just like the actual ford truck better. and I am coming to this site for help as to what years and options to avoid.

Stick with the 7.3 then. If you don't plan to go hog wild with mods any 99.5-03 7.3 is a good truck

99-02 All had the 7.3 in them. Yes 2000-2002 and some 2003 trucks have the PMR rods, while the earlier ones have the forged rods....Dont worry about that unless you plan on going over 400 hp with it. If you just want reliability, and possibly a few things like chip, intake, and exhaust, you cant beat the 7.3.....

Heres a few questions....
How many miles are on the truck?
Is it on its original Tranny?
What did the previous owner use it for?
Are there any leaks?

The most common problem with these trucks, would have to be oil leaks....Mainly things like the IPR sticking, the ICP going bad......If the valley of the engine is dry, and it idles correctly, chances are your in good shape. If the valley is wet, or oil is dripping under the truck, or if it looks like it has a main seal leak, it has a leak somewhere on the top of the engine, which can sometimes be a PITA to figure out.

They officially switched to the PMR rods in October of 2000. However the PMR rod itself came out in August of 2000, so there are a few trucks that were made between August and September that had PMR's in them, and there's a few trucks in the 2 to 3 months after october that still had forged rods in them.

But as mentioned above, no need to worry about the rods as long as your not planning on going over 400hp with it

Just noticed you were from NC,

Where at in NC?

I'm up here in the mountains in the Asheville area.

The truck in my sig is for sale. PM me if your interested
