laws for exhaust

i'm over here in oregon and i want to get a stack, but i'm not sure how legal it is. i've been asking around for some exhaust rules, but i can't get a definite answer. i know for sure a cat is required, because it is a federal law, but i'm not sure about needing a muffler, db level, and pipe end location. i would ask someone around here with stacks if they had any problems (tickets), but i don't think i have even seen anyone around here with stacks. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
travis

Check if your truck has a cat on it. mine didnt have one stock lol, so i didnt put one on aftermarket. Im in az, and i havent read anything about exhaust noise..especially with a diesel. just to be safe, put a muff on but get a flow through. no restriction

If your worried about the cat, get one and hollow it out. at emmisions they just make you spool the turbo a few times and make sure you dont coal TOO much.

BTW im in Arizona so laws might be different.

Get rid of the cat if you have one. Stacks are all good, got a couple buddy's that have them and haven't had a problem.

thanks for the replies. as for now i don't have a cat (i don't think it came stock with one), but still have a muffler. i want to get a single 5" stack straight piped, i was just wondering that as long as it ends behind the passenger cab i would be alright. also a big rig driver the stack end has to be at least 6" above the top of the cab, don't know if thats true for passenger rigs or not.

I've never gotten pulled over in Oregon for any sort of muffler violation. I've been pulled over and not a word about the exhaust, mostly the speed. There is no cat or muffler on my truck. The turbo is my muffler. As long as you don't have to go to the DEQ for emissions testing you should be good to go.

You don't have to worry about DEQ either. I'm in a DEQ county and as long as your truck's gvwr is more than 8500 pounds you don't even need to talk to any of them kool-aid drinkers.

cool, thanks. the last thing i want is to put in a stack, and be forced to take it out and be stuck with a hole in the bed.

The law in MA, is something like "Any modification of the exhaust or emissions system, or tampering with it to make it louder is illegal." On the other hand, Ive had dual 6" stacks for several months now, and have been pulled over for them, but its usually just to ask where I got them!!! One occasion a cop asked if I had a muffler, and I said, I wasnt sure, because I got the truck with the stacks...And he just let me go.
