'94 to '03 7.3 powerstrokes are basicly the same. Diffrences are in the bolt ons like injectors turbo mech or elec fuel pump. I have a '96/'97 motor I bought for $300 as a spare long block.
Older moters will have better connecting rods (forged vs PMR) with the switch over being sometime late 2000. Others will be able to give more exact info... I forget exact dates and ser #'s.
So if your injectors and bolt on stuff is ok an older motor is fine.
