What is the long nipple covered by the rubber boot on the WHA for

I will be taking my wheels apart today because when I turn them by hand I cannot feel any wiggle however at the same point in the rotation I can hear something dropping in the wheel hub assembly which makes me think a bearing. when I had the tire off the other day I noticed a rubber boot about 3/4 of an inch tall covering a long nipple almost like an extended grease zerk. What the hell is that for?

For the vacuum hubs, I would bet you don't have shift on the fly automatic hubs?

Ah, ha...You are correct in that I do not have auto hubs and am actually glad. I am going to pull the hubs today and repack them. Thanks for the info.
