Results of oil comparison

Here are the results of my test, I mean no offense to anyone and I am not claimimg to be any type of expert at all!

I will start with the facts on my truck 2001 7.3l PSD see mods in my posts. I changed my oil 437 miles ago. I used Rotella 15w40 in the typical manner. I drained the oil from plug in pan, changed oil filter added 12 quarts of oil, started the truck for about 20-30 seconds, then shutt off. Added remaining oil until dipstick read full, approx total 15 quarts. I used 4-1 gallon jugs and had approx 1 quart left according to the marks on the jug.

I already had all the items needed to remove oil from top reservoir. I started my truck and drove aroung my neighborhood approx 12 blocks then parked in my driveway. I hooked up a JB 5cfm vacuum pump to an isolation bottle and recovered just under 12 oz of oil from the reservoir described in the video. That was the capacity of my bottle. I then cleaned up the drain plug and surrounding area with degreaser, then loosened the plug until I drained 8oz from the oil pan under the engine into a clean plastic cup.

I then poured 1oz of each oil sample into a 2 oz glass jar, then applied a 0.1ml sample of each oil on a spot of standard piece of printer paper using an oral syringe. I also applied 0.5ml of oil to the top of the glass jar turned over which made a good white background to show color of oil.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE RESULTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No discernable color difference to the naked eye on any of the samples. I tried several different drops on paper as well as holding a light behind the oil sample jarswith varying amounts left in the jar. To my vision there was no color/transparency difference what so ever.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST MY 2 CENTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My opinion is next time I change my oil I will recover as much oil as I can in this reservoir along with the oil from my drain pan, just so I know I have as much fresh oil as possible. But I do not believe in my own vehicle that the oil in the reservoir or injector system could become isolated or fail to circulate back to the oil pan causing a build up of contaminants.

I took some pics and but will try to post them after I get cleaned up

You do know that on a 7.3 that all of maybe 15oz drains out of the HPOP res everytime the engine is shut down. Eventually all of the oil will pass through the HPOP res.

Yeah, I dont think it circulates as much as all the lower end oil. Im sure it does circulate some, but just at a much slower pace. Kinda like theguy was saying earlier on here, even though its an open circuit system, there are some places that do not circulate. Sounds like this top end is one of those places.

Well I bought into it and changed all of my oil yesterday and would have to say I do like the idea of getting as much fresh oil as I can during an oil change but...
It turned into quite a nightmare for me. I used the cheap manual pump to pump the oil out of the reservoir and the suction tube ended up falling off into my reservoir so I got to take the top off to go fishing for that tube which was a pain in the a$$ and added about an hour to my oil change. Than after I finished with all of that and went to put the plug back on I dropped it and it ended up underneath my fuel filter housing so by the time I found it I was out another hour. So after about 3 hours and half a pack of cigarettes all I can say is be CAREFUL…

On the positive side my truck does seem to start up easier….
