I like this idea, but there is a flaw that a previous member already stated. in the video, that guy had to run the motor 3 different times. if you haven't changed the bottom end oil yet, then you are essentially putting dirty oil back in. if you have changed the bottom oil, then it will eventually mix with the top oil and it sort of defeats the purpose of trying to get the most, freshest oil into the motor. To bad there is not a way to empty all 3 quarts at once.

I've heard its best to change the oil on a warm engine, right?

My question: wouldn't most of the oil (including the 3 qts) drain to the bottom after sitting all night?

the remainder of the oil stays in the high pressure pump, oil rails, and injectors ,and high pressure pump, if it didnt the high pressure oil system, would lose porime every night and cause lots of no start problems , hope that answers your question

If time allows, why not get as much of the used oil out of your engine as you can? Would any of you fill your new oil filter with oil poured out of the old one? Put your plug back in before the pan completely drains? Drop your fuel tank and not get all the debris out of it before reinstalling it? Even make a pot of coffee without rinsing out the pot?

I have never done a top end oil change, but it does seem like it would make it a more thorough job. I may try it next time and see if I notice any difference.
ok yes i think if you have the time by all means do it. but im saying that it will not brake or make your truck. and on the wifes car do most people drain the fill the oil cooler? samething?

sorry to bring up an old thread but instead of replying to one of the other threads and have everyone go OMG this is covered.....

anyhow, here's my $.02

I have access to a FREE vacuum pump like the dude uses, AND i just bought my truck with 115,000 and when i changed the oil in it, it was BLACK BLACK.

my thinking is change the top end oil next oil change and ill be good cause im gonna change my oil every 4,000 or go by hours if i get an hour meter.

bottom line, what can it hurt? i understand it prolly doesnt need to be done often, or at all if you had truck new and changed the oil regularly, but for those who buy em used and dont know the clear history, change it when you buy it to start on a clean slate.

Its probably not going to hurt or be too much of a waste of time if you do it every other oil change.

The reason why he does the 3 startups is if you empty and refill, then run you are putting 90% clean new oil in the oil galleys, then shutting it off when the res is filling with oil, repeating the process untill the oil galleys are filled with new oil, then changing the oil.

There is a potential of heavy solids over a long period of time sitting up in the upper res, and never having a chance to drain down to pan, so I can see some validity doing it once every couple months or once a year, but surely not every oil change.

I will say this. I found his site just before I bought my first 7.3 truck. The first oil change I did normal oil change...ran for a few days and then compared the oil on the dipstick to the oil drawn from the res, and the oil from the res was way darker.

The next changed I did the top oil too, Im 3500 miles in and I can still see throught the oil on my dipstick.

Its a debateable plan, but it certainly cant hurt anything!

The res only holds 1qt but almost 3qts cycle through there I think. But you can only pull the 1qt out of the res each time.

Your injectors sounding quieter validates the reason to do it.

everything was running fine and then the connections on the lid came loose.

i think the 2 reasons are 1: the lid is flimsy THIN metal and 2: i only let the 60second epoxy set for 15mins!

any suggestions on a better container?
