I love it, I don't have any real complaints. There things I nitpick about the truck here and there, but I haven't owned a vehicle yet that I haven't nitpicked over.

2nd gens are decent trucks, but everyone I know with one has to do a good job of maintaining them, much more than with 03+ trucks. I would go with a common rail 03+ any day over a 24v, but a 12v is still a bit of a toss up.

The CTD never had a 46RE...that piece of crap was reserved for the gassers...had one in my '97 2500 V8 and it gave up the ghost at 96,000 miles. The CTD got either the 47RE or the 47RH for the 2nd Gen trucks.

Also, that piece of junk Carter LP and the VP44 are problematic for those trucks. I put an AirDog FP100 on the frame rail of my '01 3500 and never worried about it again. Blue Chip Diesel has a VP44 that has the FedEx computer, which apparently resists the heat issues the OE VP44 has.

The APPS is also another problem, which was solved by the guys on the TDR.

The NV5600 is a good tranny, but New Venture no longer makes it, and finding parts is getting harder and harder; I had to wait three weeks for mine to get rebuilt.

I liked the 48RE on my '05, firm shifts and it never got past 160*, when I towed our Airstream up Wolf Pass, in Colorado, in the summer of '06.

The one thing I will say is that the Dodge interiors suck...I've had three and the '01 Laramie SLT Plus was the closest thing I liked. I would like to have gotten ahold of the engineer who designed the cupholders on the early 2nd Gen trucks and choked him...the 98-02 cupholders were better.

The interior on my '04 F350 King Ranch blows Dodge out of the water, hands down. There is way more room in this truck than in the Quad Cab of my '05 CTD; I very rarely have to use the heat on the seats for my back either with this truck.

You touched everything that didn't come to my drunken mind at the time, lol!

btw, best cupholders I've ever had have been in my Rams, both of them 03's. The ones in my my old 99 Ford weren't bad until you turned......you'd dump an empty foam cup out of those stupid *** things. But whoever designed the ones in the Dodges needs to be given an award.....I've never dumped anything out of them, and I've tried lol

i owned 2 dodges a 95 and a 98 before this ford and i would definately have to give ford the leg up on them in the interior department ( cloth on doorpanels just ask to look shabby in a couple years ) and like you guys said their cup holders were crappy. I never owned an 02 and up but ive been in them and they looked way better. My 95 was a gasser the tranny was gone at about 60000 k . It was a real toss up between dodge and ford when i bought my 06 sometime i wonder if i should have went dodge but the ford has been alright. I'll start being brand loyal when they start giving me the trucks for free

Ebay, craigslist, junk yards...etc etc. There are two pumps on the 12V motors. The VE rotary pumps and the p7100 pump, the latter found on the 1994-1998 and supports more horsepower.

I think that the Dodge is a good truck we had a 01 and a 05 at the company that I used to work for. What we used them for is to haul big trailers of sheet rock they weighed anywhere form 9000 to 20000lbs. I personally liked the 01 better it felt like it pulled better then the 05 that was said to have way more power ( and both trucks were bone stock ). But like they said be ready for tranny issues we had to replace them about every 100000k. We had Fords and one Chevy in our other shop that had chips in them but there trannys held up way better it seemed. To me I think that all of the diesels are really good now and they all seem to pull about the same if there stock. But Im a Ford guy i think that the Ford by far has the best interior out of them all. Like they said the Dodge crew cab that you are looking for is small the same as a extended for the Ford and Chevy. The Chevy does ride the best but you are buying a truck aren't you??? So i guess its up to you what you want to do and plus I think the Dodges are way cheaper at least the new ones are. Let us know what you do!!!

Have had both Dodge (chipped out Bullydog, bigger injecdtors, larger 5" exhaust). Tranny went south after 70,000 miles. I towed average loads 6-8k and thought I treated it well. Dodge said "those are 70K transmissions". GREAT! a 300K motor with a 70K tranny. Interior of Dodge fell apart and was cheap as could be. Drink holder rack broke after 3 years.

Ford motor (06) just as powerful (if not more) as the Dodge. Interior is superior (lariat edition) and tranny is superior to Dodge (Ford tranny doesn't try to run away going downhill). Maybe Dodge has improved but after my tranny experience who needs those heaches after 70K?

Ford has some minor issues with their EGR vaves but overall I'm a happy 250 owner.

Well i say the 04.5 and 05 is what you should go with but dodge trannys or really any diesels are weak so dont go stupid and add power with out a good tranny upgrade

A $40,000 Dodge should AT LEAST build a transmission which will last more than 70,000 miles. NO EXCUSES there. My truck was used minimally for towing and I did not abuse it.. GMC /CHEVY (700R4 trannys) did the same thing back in the 80's---BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE GMC CHEVY PARTS DEPT....). The dream truck would be a Cummins in a Ford.........Why don't they do it?

you must have had a s****y cadillac! i love just as much as the next guy but my bosses 05 dodge big horn is awesome. i have def. tossed around the idea of buying one and putting ford emblems on it! get me a Ford Ram. the 04-05 is my favorite and the 98-02.
