Oil and Filter question.

Hey guys first off love the forum! i just recently bought a 2001 F350 6 speed with 281000 miles on it. the guy i bought it from just had the oil changed around 500 miles ago and used rotella but couldnt remember which weight. i noticed there was a small oil leak coming down the oil filter and when i checked it it was a full turn loose so i tightened it back up and hopefully it fixes the leak. anyway the truck is reading a little low. this is the first diesel i have ever owned and was wondering what weight to put in the truck.

Also i have read there are two fuel filters on the truck, one on the motor and one on the frame somewhere. if so how hard is the one on the frame to change?

Thanks for the advice!

15w-40 for motor oil. factory 7.3s only have a fuel filter on top of the motor. some people do what is called a hutch mod(which adds another filter on the frame).

I run Rotella 15w40 with a gallon of full synthetic 5w40. Motorcraft 1995 filter. I change every 5k miles. It got too expensive here in FL to do at 3500 miles. Oil and filter is $70... Let me know if anyone goes longer between changes. FYI, you can sign up for the Shell points when you use Rotella oil.

I run 15w40 Rotella from about March to November, in the winter I drop to 10w30 Rotella (diesel rated not regular 10w30). Dropping to 10w30 means I can start down to -25C ( which I regularly have to) without being plugged in, starts up like nothing.

thanks for the input. i guess i can stick with 15w40 all the time i live in tn and it rarely gets below 25-30 degrees here. i plan on changing my fuel filter today, was told go with motorcraft, and the diy air filter. not sure yet if i want a tuner for it or not its my daily driver and i haul a 12ft trailer with mowers. any suggestions about if i should get one or not would be great.

On a 7.3 there is only one fuel filter on the top of the engine in the valley. The 6.0 has one on top of the engine and on the frame rails.

You can mix CJ4 10w30, 5w40 or 15w40 without any problems so whatever you can get your hands on to top off. Honestly if it is only a quart or two your engine won't notice a differ if you dump almost any motor oil in there.
