I have an Early 99 Aug 98 build. I'm the 2nd owner. F350 CC long box with 6 spd. I have been getting high egt's since I owned it. I got it with 77,000 on it and now it has 170000. DP tuner F5 4in. turbo back exhaust, 6637 intake, Terminator 500 HPOP, fuel cross over line ,oil cross over line Regulated return. Coolant filter, new water pump & radiator, new 350 HP south Bend clutch, gray CPS, new ebpv and tubing, new boots on inter cooler tubing. Still need to put the two tubes on in the valley.
Shop did a leak down test of the inter-cooler system ,said it held pressure. Did a contribution test showed a problem with #5 cylinder. the mechanic said either a cylinder or an injector. I am going to have him replace all 8 injector at once. Going with remans from Gomers diesel in Missoula,Mt with 15% over stock.
I can't locate any leaks. They only thing I can find is a little soot on the drivers side bank up pipe. Can that cause the EGT's to run High. at normal cruising at 75-80 MPH tact reading 2300 RPM's with 3.73 gears the temps run between 6 to 900 degrees in the 60 HP econo mode. If I put my foot into it the EGT's climb real fast to 1250 and would climb higher if I didn't take the foot off. If I pull my enclosed snowmobile trailer ,total weight is around 6500lbs.I have to watch the EGT gauge constantly.
does anyone have a solution besides selling it. Do the early 99 with the smaller turbo run hotter.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks guys in advance
The early 99s have bigger exhaust housings so that helps with egts. How well is your wastegate tightened down? That leak isn't helping but in my opinion its not enough to make a 100* difference unless its really really bad. Your exhaust back pressure valve isn't partially stuck closed?
TSbean, thanks I'll check into those two things you mentioned. Never did check around the turbo or waste gate for leaks. I hear guys pulling more weight and they are only running 1100 degrees or cooler. I did have Jody Tipton from DP tuners live tune the truck a couple of years ago in Denver. We were going up some pretty good grades on I 40 the runs to the Eisenhower Tunnel. Had to do down shift to third sometimes to drop the EGT's. My concern is how fast the EGT rise when just getting on it on flat roads. :thumb:
Those 2 things are really what I can think of. What kind of boost are you seeing at those temps? I know mine I can floor it andmitll get to about 900 then slow down and get to about 1100 max with my foot floored still accelerating at 80mph. If i lug it I can get it to climb real quick. Cruising at 70 its usually around 700
The most boost I ever saw was around 22lbs. The egt climb really fast when I put my foot into it. When going up hill if I don't gear down the climb fast also. Question would bad injectors make the EGT's climb like that. I am assuming that I have a air leak some where?
thats pretty low for a tuned truck, i hit 20psi with a completely stock truck, so im going to say you have a leak somewhere, and I want to point my finger at the waste gate, but again that might not be your only issue.
if it was me i would start with the wastegate, unplug the red line that goes to the head of the wastegate (this will disable the wastegate) and stick it on one of the IC pipes clamps bolt to plug it, if you dont plug it you WILL have a boost leak. if that helps significantly with your egt issues than youve found your problem.
Thank you; I'll try that. I was just reading how hard it is to get the up pipes off, and besides I have an early 99, and will have to see who has the up pipes for it.
How far can you drive the pickup with that red line being plugged off. I have a 200 mile trip I have to do later on today.
yeah they are a pain, i havent done mine but i watched somebody do it and it didnt look very fun...I think riffraff might have them if your looking to replace em. thats the first place i would look.
my up pipes are leaking.. and i dont have high egts at all, like stated in one of my previous posts. is it contributing to his high egts? yes of course it is but not dramatically, but a leaky up pipe also isnt going to keep him at 22 psi unless its absolutely, utterly horrible.
Mine were leaking and it shot the egt's way up, and I still could hit 22psi. They egt's climbed real fast too. I was just sharing a personal experience, I have a 38r though, can't remember what turbo the OP has.
TS bean; I unplugged the red line leading to the waste gate. It seem to help the egt's they didn't climb up so fast. I hope I didn't screw anything up I took a 400 miles round trip from yesterday to today. I left the waste gate unplugged for the entire time. Also I noticed when I put the DP tuner on 80 HP econo I could pull 25 lbs of boost. Where as running at 60 HP econo the most it would pull was around 22 lbs. I usually run at the 60 HP setting.I guess I need to order a new waste gate. This was running about 80 mph at 2300 rpm's and the boost was around 5 lbs unless I was climbing a hill. This is with a 6 speed manual. I don't need to down shift.
I can't get the truck into the diesel shop for another week to the new injector's put in. That's a big ouch.($$$$) I took a look at the early 99 up pipes on line there about $ 2-300 more than the later 99's and up.
I don't know where else to look for a boost leak. I think after replacing the waste gate and up pipes I hope that keeps the EGT's down.
Thanks all who offered some suggestions
