buying used

I am in the market for a 99-03 7.3 crew 4x4. And am obviously going to be doing some upgrades, ie. lift engine mods, trans mods, etc. How safe is to start moding the engine on a high mileage engine, I realize that it has a lot to do whith how well it was maintained but should I not consider purchasing a truck if it has over a certain amount of miles on it. I plan to have the pickup for quite a long time so a fixer upper would be out of the question, I would rather spend money moding than fixing(isn't that how we all are). Alos what should I be on the look out for in that truck Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When looking for mine, I didn't want to go over 70k... Pretty comfortable with the one I bought with 80k on it though. Also, depending on where you are from.... what to look for? I had to check underneath, drivelines, etc.... for rust, etc. to make sure the vehicle wasn't from the coast.

i wouldn't be afraid of the milage. my friend just bought one last year with 450,000 on it and it still drives like new. I know another guy that bought one with 900,000 miles on it and the first motor went 700,000. i just bought mine last spring with 84,000 miles, i have a chip and just installed a lift and 35's. i am getting redy to replace my clutch and a turbo pedistal, but from what i hear the turbo pedistals go out quite often. as far as clutch mine has 95,000 miles on it now so an upgraded clutch should get me over another 100,000 miles. i personaly wouldn't buy with an auto tranny, but thats just me.

psd's last so long that mileage is not an issue, i dont think...i dont know where youve been looking, but ebay has a ton of new psd's. most of them are from car dealers, and alot are in texas..i.e.they are western trucks with pretty honest sellers...it might be worth a check...

happy shopping...

Yeah I noticed that there an awful lot of trucks comin out of texas on ebay too! Nice ones. Anyway I wouldn't worry about mileage too much either. I bought mine with 112k, and it just passed 140 last months. It still runs very strong. In my old chevy, which had a gas engine, when I turned over 140 I started to think it's time to get rid of it....that thought doesn't even cross my mind with a diesel. Just take care of you tranny, you start moddin and soon enough that thing'll be toast. Oh yeah.......sold the ol 95 5.7 z71 chevy at 177k and it was still running great. It was a solid truck, like a rock...but my my psd is like titanium!
