loss of power

'03 7.3 ps , blowing some smoke on acceleration, loss of some power. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone in the Richmond, Va metro area that can help? I live in New Kent County, Va. Idles fine, smooth acceleration, no apparent loss of mpg.

I checked the boots for leaks a few months ago and found one. Tightened the clamp and it was gone. I have the original factory boots still on it.

You can get a boost leak detector from dieselsite or Pull the boots, clean them, and spray them with hair spray

I have never heard of using hair spray, in theory it sounds like a good idea! I must try this now!

OK, so I started it up this morning leaving work to go home and pulling out of the parking lot I jumped on it. It seemed to have the power that it used to have but it produced a large black smoke cloud and it went away. When I tried it again, no smoke. It has really lost top end acceleration. It has the same acceleration at 50% throttle as it does at 100% throttle. To sum it up, no guts on the top end. Good idle. Smooth acceleration. Good starting. Occasional grey smoke when I step into it some. Large black smoke cloud once (today). On rare occasion it seems to have found the lost power on the top end temporarily. No loss of fuel mileage.
