Question about buying a powerstroke

Hi guys, First post on this forum.
Anyways, I have the option to buy a 2001 Extended cab short bed powerstroke, automatic trans for 5000$. My buddy is selling it, only problem is it has 406,000 miles. I know that he's kept up with maintenance on the truck, however that high of mileage worries me a bit about big things going wrong haha. Is there anything I should really look for on the truck? What tends to go wrong at those high of miles? How much would it cost for a rebuild kit on a 7.3? Luckily my dad is a mechanic and would help me on the rebuild if the truck needs it.

Thanks, Tim

At that high of miles what should I really be looking for, aside from the obvious leaks, knocks, etc.
Also the truck has airbags, as well as trailerbrakes and a 4 position chip.

honestly im not that versed in the 7.3 to give reliable advice.. i just know that a well maintained 7.3 doesnt make the power of other power stroked but makes up for it in reliability.

Welcome to the org.

Do a compression check. Should be between 400-440. If you do it engine cold, expect to be about 8-10% less. Have the trans checked out. If trans is OK, don't do a flush, just a few QTS and a filter.

If compression is too low. You can get a Blackwater short block for $3100 with nice warranty. Tuscany on here has dealt with them a few times but he works on 6.0's
Or maybe your dad's buddies can get a better price on machine work.

If its good. You should have no issue getting another 100k miles.
