I cant help you but i had a 96 also and when i had it around 85,000miles it started to do the same thing. It has 92,000 on it now and no probs. But i would like to know what it is when you find out let me know. Its a auto and it only does it at idle.

Exaust brake?

I am not entirely sure but it might bet the valve in pipe exiting the turbo (which is the exaust brake). If you can hear the hissing sound from the exaust pipe then that is most likely what the noise is , especialy if it stops the engine temp reaches a certin point. Just a shot in the dark. Hope it helps

It's not an exhaust brake but the warm up valve. It colses when engine is cold to help heat up the motor.

Warm up valve?

I have not heard of that. I just asumed it used the brake valve for that. Wear is the warm up valve located?
