Send a message via AIM to Tikal
Was it while you were driving or when you first cranked it up?
On initial start-up it sounds like glowplugs and/or relay... What causes the white smoke on startup is the air temp in the engine not being hot enough to completely combust the fuel...

Goin' down the road and gettin' white smoke after it's warm though is another beast....
...Could be a major problem i.e. water gettin' in the cylinders like bigred said

unless you have water in your fuel it sounds like a major problem. how is your coolant level?
